Proton , should I do it?

Hi all,

I am interested in Protonvpn.
How is it, and is it really better than for example NordVPN? Or Nord has better marketing

How is Proton for Android, battery usage, internet speed?

Black Friday deals are great atm, so thinking about it

Any suggestions?

Thanks

So I have used Nord, Surfshark, windscribe, mullvad and then Proton. I get almost the same exact speed with protonvpn connected to the fastest available server. Nord and Surfshark are too bad and scummy. Nord charges 100$ per year after your promo ends, their app is very buggy and let’s not talk about privacy concerns.

The only VPN maybe on the same level to Proton is Mullvad but Mullvad doesn’t support streaming while Proton does (Netflix works for me). Also Proton was cheaper for me because I bought the unlimited since I needed email and cloud storage as well.

So yeah, I would really recommend protonvpn. It’s good, one of the best.

Proton vpn works well. Speeds are good, choices for locations are good, security is good, but most of all they are a trustworthy company.

You know that ProtonVPN has a free tier right?

Simply create yourself an Proton account (if you don’t have one already) and try the VPN for yourself.

Yes the Free servers are only available in Netherlands, US and Japan and they are under extremely high load but it will give you an impression of the app, how it all works and so on.

Generally ProtonVPN is really good for streaming, it’s also very fast and they have good apps for Android, Windows and MacOS (the Linux CLI and App is really shit right now, but they are working on it). They also offer you the ability to simply download a Wireguard profile of your liking (or multiple) which means you don’t need to use the official Proton VPN clients, you can also use your router directly or the official Wireguard client.

I have 2 main issues with Proton:

  1. Their VPN Severs are easily detectable by websites and services which result in you being unable to access some services, and this has been getting more and more common lately! More so, captchas appearing each and every teI search don’t do a favour neither!

  2. The Linux app is a Mess!

Hmmm, NordVPN has been hacked at least two times so far. I went with ProtonVPN…Just sayin…

Proton is far better than Nord and Surfshark.

I personally find their VPN and other services like encrypted online storage etc extremely good. The new Stealth VPN protocol is brilliant. On a network I won’t disclose here, it will block any VPN traffic and websites which always detect the VPN traffic and throw up numerous verification pages or simply won’t work…the aforementioned network appears to have no idea that it’s allowing VPN traffic through the very strong protections and firewall which blocks all other VPN protocols regardless of provider. For obvious reasons the exact details are not publicised but it seems to be using various protocols and combining or using aspects from multiple protocols to obfuscate the traffic and from what I can tell appears to wrap itself in a sort of “outer layer” of standard HTTPS traffic which prevents the detection of VPN tunnel within it. From everything I’ve been able to figure out, it creates a VPN connection through standard Protocols but then immediately runs other VPN protocols inside of this seemingly standard HTTPS traffic. Best educated guess is that it’s a very clever VPN tunnel wrapped inside standard but secure protocols which prevent packet inspection from being able to detect it. I doubt I’ve got everything correct or that Proton would confirm or deny this (understandably) but I can tell you this for sure. The network I’m using the Proton Stealth Protocol on, slaps down every other connection like VPN’s and even prevents many pages from loading because it detects any Google analytics’ data packets reaching back to Google’s servers; however the moment I turn on the Stealth Protocol it doesn’t prevent it in the slightest. It doesn’t appear to have any idea that it’s “unusual traffic” and if I’m correct about the method used…I don’t see an even remotely reasonable way of preventing it unless you block all HTTPS traffic which would essentially make the network nonfunctional.

If you are technically savvy, have the time and money, I suggest to build your own with OpenVPN.

I used Proton before NordVPN, and both are good. The main reason I decided to stay with Nord is that it’s more stable while streaming. Also, you can compare them both in this comparison table and decide for yourself

Ok, thanks for the information

Yes, Protonvpn looks really nice. I contacted Nord, and they gave me like really good deals, for 28 months - 80 euro . But yes, I am concerned how trustworthy are they

I have the unlimited plan with Proton as well — and would highly recommend it. I was a user of their email service initially, but am enjoying the complete package. They do focus on privacy which is a big one these days!

Thanks for this. I’m contemplating switching over my email provider and vpn to proton next year, but i’ve been a bit on the fence about it. Your points are very convincing!

LPT that Proton doesn’t seen to advertise is with Proton Unlimitted you also get Simplelogin Premium ($30/year) for free. Do consider this option because if you consider this it is highly worth it.

How does Windscribe compare to Proton? I got in on Windscribe early on a stack social lifetime deal for $24 years ago. I don’t use VPN super often but when I do it seems to work well enough. Just curious how you think it fairs against Proton?

All of that has an iOS app except for the calendar (currently in closed beta)

That is my point , if I pay for something, than I want the best.

Yes,I am using it for one day. I checked speed on my wifi on phone, with and without VPN Netherlands, and difference is like 3-4%. Which is really nice

Really ? That is not good

Everyone saying that, but why ?
