Hello, I’m running Frostwire and also using a VPN. I’ve checked my IP address on ipleak and canyouseeme and the VPN is working. But, on my VPN detector in the tray on Frostwire it has a red dot meaning not connected. On my phone it has the green dot. I’m just wondering will anyone be able to see me on Frostwire? Thanks
I think you both missed the point. I just asked one question. Is my ISP able to see me on Frostwire?
Agree 100%. I do not understand why people think a VPN is some sort of magic super security. It just moves the possible point of logging from your ISP to the VPN provider.
It also has negative performance impact because first any data has to flow from the destination to the VPN, then to your endpoint, instead of directly to the endpoint.
The question you asked is “can anyone see me on FrostWire” the technical answer there is always yes.
How with the VPN? It is not connecting thru my ISPs IP address.
Your ISP can’t but anyone connected to the torrent will see you connected via the VPN. They won’t know it’s you, they’ll just see the VPN IP.
The ISP will only see the VPN connection not any traffic through it.
When rights holders get a list of IPs attached to torrents they send out all the letters, VPN providers get thousands of them but as long as they don’t keep logs they just throw them out because they can’t tell who of the thousands of people connected to the VPN actually generated the traffic in question.
As to your other issue. Bind your VPN interface to FrostWire (I’m not familiar with FrostWire so I can’t tell you how to do this, you will have to google it).
That way FrostWire will only access the internet through the VPN.
Thank you for the information. I have drop protection through my VPN provider. It pauses the internet connection anytime the VPN is not connected. Is this binding it to the interface that you’re speaking of?
No.
Binding means the BitTorrent client only sees the internet through the VPN.
