Why doesn't TVNZ offer a paid subscription for overseas viewers?

I don’t really understand why this isn’t available - there’s big international audience who *wants* to watch it legally and can’t. The YouTube uploads get like 150k views in a couple days before being taken down, add up the views across multiple uploads of the same episode and you’ve got +1M views per episode. Why don’t they simply offer a subscription service and cash in on an untapped marketplace that’s currently only benefitting VPN sales? Does it have something to do with TVNZ being publicly owned? Or is this Kiwi isolationism at work?

Get the taskmaster app! It’s still a little behind season wise, but it’s got most UK, Australia, and NZ!

Do you mean a paid subscription for a single show? Or a subscription for TVNZ on Demand?

Because licensing is the answer to the latter, and it simply wouldn’t be worthwhile to set up a paid subscription infrastructure for the former.

Strongly suspect this would be very complicated for the licensing of all the overseas shows (and local shows they already licence elsewhere), so they’d have to create a whole sectioned off version of TVNZ plus just for local content, and at that point the cost/reward just wouldn’t make sense.

TVNZ mostly has international content that they hold the NZ rights to, if they were to open it up to overseas they would have to completely redesign their site and content to take all that down and only leave the NZ content.

Even if that were to happen, they probably only have the NZ rights to taskmaster NZ. It is owned by a production company and TVNZ are the broadcast partner and it is funded by NZ on air (which requires a broadcast partner to fund a show). They would have to pay the production company for the international rights, which would be hard to justify as they are meant to be for New Zealanders.

Basically tv show rights are still in the age of regional rights despite the internet being a thing.

I also think it’s ridiculous that tvnz does not have a premium service for people who hate ads.

I would gladly pay tvnz or 3now just so I don’t have to watch another ad again.
That is why I don’t even have those apps.
I prefer ad free streaming services.

I pay $20 or so dollars a month to watch NZ, AU, and UK versions live (or shortly after air)- more than Netflix! I’d really prefer to give my money to the channel making it to ensure it can be funded again. Totally agree.

Use a VPN, connect to NZ server then change your time zone device settings to NZ /Auckland …use TVNZ App…watch all the shows

TVNZ buys the rights to play this content in NZ.

Rightsholders can sell the rights in different markets & don’t sell ‘global’ licenses. You will see the same thing with services like Netflix - their offerings will be different depending on the country you are in because they have to negotiate the rights for each market they operate in.

territories and licencing etc

So you don’t understand liscencing laws to cut a long story short?

Because it has shows other people have the rights to overseas. It’s legally impossible.

Just watch on ozmartian

Agreed, but also!.. Why don’t they offer a subscription to NZ customers. I would happily pay a subscription to TVNZ so I don’t have to watch the ads. Untapped both domestically and internationally

Its simple. The people who sell the rights for the shows sell for territories. In NZ, it’s New Zealand. They legally can’t offer outside NZ. Thats why the big dogs like Netflix and Amazon have to spend squillions, to get global rights.

While we’re here, what are some obscure shows (only on TVNZ) that are unreasonably good?

Agree! Tried to watch outrageous fortune from Australia for years. Would have paid anything to watch it

This. I’m in UK. Would be only too happy to pay for Taskmaster NZ, but it’s not an option (at least I’ve never found a legit streaming service for it), so I have to find ‘dodgy’ sources.

They could make a tidy amount of money selling it… don’t know why they wouldn’t :man_shrugging:

It’s a lot of work, and the demand MIGHT be more limited that we’d like to believe as fans of Taskmaster NZ.

Now the tv ad marketing money has heavily dried up? They might, or at least offer an ad free subscription here in New Zealand.

But again, it’ll take time to implement and support that.

All of Task Master is on Stremio - check it out, it’s been great
