So recently I get my LA vpn for the regular labor task (training, etc) for the LA position, but I was wondering if there’s any restriction to use it like outside of work in my personal laptop, just like being curious or something like that.
They didn’t give you a VPN. They gave you a Zukey which allows you to connect to their VPN or to sign in to sites that require it. It’s registered through Midway and will only work with Amazon Enterprise managed software and sites.
What would happen?
You’d probably get access from home using your Zukey, using a virtual machine desktop application called “Amazon WorkSpaces,” which you’d have to download and configure for your home computer. You can get the official release for, I think, just about any operating system, compiled and ready-to-go. It’s pretty light-weight and doesn’t use many resources on your own computer, at least in my experience. Completely sand-boxed: it’s a virtual machine platform that doesn’t interfere with your own computer.
Be forewarned, Amazon WorkSpaces sometimes works fine to browse the Amazon Wiki or whatever, but it’s very picky about updates and such to your Amazon workspace (which won’t be exactly the same as on a laptop at Amazon…meaning, it won’t have your browser history saved and whatever). So keep checking the ACME for any needed “remediations” and let it do its thing.
However, if you run into a snag (or, more accurately, whatever rube in Seattle failed to produce acceptable code), remote IT help is pretty fast to help you out. You may have to let them give you a web-browser Chime link to show your badge and, like, a driver’s license or something, but they’re pretty helpful.
When it works, it works just about the same as when on-site.
It’s also convenient if Chime on your mobile phone updates and needs you to re-authenticate…you can do that from home instead of waiting until getting on a computer at work, with the Zukey and Amazon WorkSpaces. (Using activate.amazon-corp.com or whatever the URL is.)
Oh, and:
if there’s any restriction to use it like outside of work in my personal laptop, just like being curious or something like that.
Well, technically, you’re not supposed to use any “Inside Amazon” stuff while off the clock. But that’s ridiculous, if all you’re doing is reactivating Chime on your phone (yes, I use Chime to communicate to managers/leadership all the time when at home) or checking your @amazon.com e-mail, or searching the Amazon wiki.
So, IMHO, no, there’s not any possible way that you’d get in trouble for using the tools provided for your own enrichment, as well as to stay in contact with your team at work. I’d be confident taking it to Judge Judy or Judge Joe Brown if it came to that! Used properly, it’s not a labor law kind of situation.
Anyway, “Learn and be curious” is one of the leadership principles, after all! As is “Be right, a lot”!
You can download AEA (AMAZON Enterprise Access) on your phone or table or even personal laptop. You’ll have to link it on your work computer. Read, you’ll get access. Great way to learn SOPs and many things amazon.
Also even if it worked, it’s pretty well monitored as they have me blocked from every NFL streaming site now haha. They shut you down pretty quick
