Hello, I want to know your opinions about the topic because I’m a newbie in things about open source.
I heard things about WireGuard & OpenVPN, but honestly, I don’t know what to say.
Also, I invite all the people to upvote the comments you feel are best and useful answer.
As you said you were a newbie
It’s important to keep in mind that a VPN service (like PIA, or Express VPN) is different to VPN software (like OpenVPN).
VPN software like OpenVPN can be used to connect to VPNs, these VPNs can be hosted by a service like PIA for anonymity, and security. Or the could be hosted by a company, to allow access to internal resources.
Remember with a VPN service they can see all the data going through them, they have as much access to your data as your ISP would do if you weren’t using a VPN. So even if they use open source software, you still have to trust that they only use the software they claim, and don’t keep logs
I like Proton, which has been opensourced.
Different VPN Software, differrent pros and cons.
IPSec (e.g. StrongSwan) widely supported (clients shipped with OS), more complex config.
…
Can you give me link. I heard few months back it is paid vpn
Here’s a link to pricing: Pricing | Proton VPN
They do offer a free plan if pricing is a concern for you, and also paid plans which are recommended if you’re financially able to pay as it supports their organization to continue to provide great privacy-focused resources.
Your prompt was however open source, not free, they meet that criteria and have an excellent reputation.
Yes I just checked that they made their vpn open source project. It’s good for people who can’t able to buy but I still have doubt. If they have free plan as well as paid one then aren’t free user will be nothing more than products. Our data will go through their server so how can we say they are safe to use.( I know about photon mail but vpn are seriously concerning for privacy.)
Well, if I understand correctly, you want an open source VPN to be able to examine their code to confirm how your data is handled while passing through the services servers. Here, you have that VPN option. To examine their code and confirm or debunk your concern. But if you’re not a professional programmer - specific to server side and network programming - you’ll have to, no matter what service you pick, rely on others to guide you.
Others have, based on the available criteria, opted to use this service: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/es24it/open_source_audit_new_customer/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
I would recommend, if you’re a novice that can’t examine the code yourself, to read into the independent audit they had.
I am not that professional on programming. But I can atleast check the code in free time. But looking throughout the subreddit and ppl opinion, it’s looking promising to me. If community is believing in them then I will too.
Nice, I hope it works well for you!
