What is going on with Mullvad VPN?

I’ve been a loyal fan of Mullvad VPN for years, it used to be the perfect VPN. Lately, though, I’m really disappointed with the quality. Constant disconnections, trouble connecting to entire regions for minutes at a time, and terrible speed loss (forget watching videos outside of YouTube). Plus, most regions hit you with captchas constantly if you try to Google anything.

This is happening on both my mobile and desktop devices, and over the past year, the quality has dropped a lot. I’m starting to consider switching to a different VPN provider, even though I really don’t want to.

Am I the only one experiencing these issues, or are you having problems too? And if you could suggest a good alternative, that’d be great. I’m not a fan of ProtonVPN and don’t fully trust them after some of the privacy controversies they’ve had with anonymous email accounts. Privacy isn’t my top priority, but it’d be nice as an extra feature.

P.S. This isn’t due to any local regulations—my country hasn’t tried to restrict or ban VPN providers. So, it seems to be an issue directly related to Mullvad

I never get disconnected from the internet or mullvad at all. Occasionally a server feels slow but it gets fixed by just trying a diferent one.

I prefer Mullvad over every other vpn. But lately im also getting bad connections. No disconnects tho. Im using Sweden, Albania and Germany mostly.

Did you turn on DAITA? If so, turn it off.

CAPTCHAs is a vpn problem, not specifically a mullvad problem.

Completely fine for me :person_shrugging:

Lots of things could be at play here, like: bad connection issues, a server is down somewhere, ISP maintenance, etc.

To blame Mullvad for these issues wouldn’t be fair, but you have a valid point to be upset if you’re paying for the service.

At best please contact Mullvad directly to voice your complaint, and to have them better assist you.

Multihop seems be be exacerbating it, also I suspect a lot of people are opting for the DAITA servers leading to them becoming impacted.

I don’t think the catchpa problem is unique to Mullvad, the websites are just generally hostile to VPNs

I’m connected 24/7 using Wire Guard Native app…when my laptop boots up it automatically connects to my local area.

Zero issues in the US

Which servers do you connect normally? Maybe try changing them for a bit to see if its a server issue

Am I the only one experiencing these issues, or are you having problems too?

I have no issues at all. Mullvad VPN is rock solid with a very high quality. Works excellent with YouTube.

Captchas have nothing to do with Mullvad VPN. Google and some other sites hate VPN services and do this just to harass visitors using VPN. Google don’t look at what VPN service it is, they don’t care about the name. They just use blocking lists and hit all VPN servers no matter which VPN service is behind.

Please remember that Google and some other sites earn a living on tracking and spying on people. That kind of spying becomes less accurate if a visitor is using VPN, thus they do whatever they can to harass you.

Personally I experience very few captchas with Mullvad VPN, so it doesn’t bother me.

Your connection troubles may be less if you regularly shut down your phone for a few minutes and start it again. The same applies to your laptop and other devices.

It looks like you’re the only one

Man that must suck

Works fine in Ireland

Occasional CAPTCHAs, but otherwise no problem for me (U.S.).

Mullvad still works WAY better than PIA did for me a couple of years ago when I switched. My only issue with Mullvad so far is that it prevents my scanner from talking to my computer–despite having the local network sharing option turned on.

I loved mullvad, the app was great, especially with the ability to split-tunnel, but the second they got rid of port forwarding I had to leave. Such a shame.

I’ve moved to airvpn now, which is generally very good, but a max of 10mb/s downloads and as of yet, no split-tunnelling (although they’re in the process of implementing it). It’s also very cheap if you buy it during the sales.

i’m having similar issues as you, random drops in connection. i don’t have DAITA enabled like some of the comments mentioned. i’ve also turned off obfuscation because it seems to majorly slow down my internet speed when it’s enabled.

Netherlands here, having big performance problems. Crappy speed and ping. Need to switch between wireguard servers pretty often. multiple are down for a couple of days now. More problems during “happy hours”.

I’m experiencing this too. A lot of CAPTCHAs and similar, and many times on mobile I have to try multiple attempts to connect.

I have also many issues the last period. Like others here. I can barely watch twitch streamers anymore or YouTube videos.
