Website identified I was out of the country while trying to make a purchase despite VPN/IP Location

Update;: Thanks to those that responded. After some research I identifed that I’m really a VPN Newby and that all VPN services are far from equal. I’ve abandoned VPN 2 situated in a 5 eyes country. You get what you pay for.

Recently I was in Vietnam. I had overlapping VPN subscriptions. I wanted to buy a lotto ticket in my home country (NZ) and have successfully done so many times using VPN 1. This time I first used VPN 2 and the Lotto website refused me (tried several times). I switched to VPN 1 and successfully made the purchase. This isn’t about the lotto tickets but I’m a bit concerned I’ve made the wrong choice switching to VPN 2. Both VPN’s show my IP in the country I choose. Can anyone explain why VPN 2 let me down in this case?

First post in this community and I’m not able to name the service. VPN1 = E / VPN 2= P

When you use a VPN, it’s supposed to make it look like you’re browsing from another location. But sometimes, websites can still figure out where you really are. It sounds like VPN 2 might not be as good at hiding its tracks as VPN 1. Maybe VPN 2’s IP addresses are flagged more often or they might have a problem with DNS leaks, which can reveal your real location.

VPN 1 is likely better at keeping your location hidden, which is why it worked for you. Stick with VPN 1 if it consistently works for your needs. If you’re curious, you could check for leaks with VPN 2 or ask their support for help. But in general, not all VPNs are created equal, and some just do a better job at masking your location.

Some websites will rely on a device’s GPS based location… especially for lottery purchases.

Connect to VPN 2 and test for DNS leaks

Before you visit any sites, can you check the country detected in ip2location.io using VPN1 and VPN2? Some sites using different IP geolocation service for detection.

thanks, same set of conditions for both VPN service, same website and same device.

Yes I can. The lotto ticket isn’t the issue tho. Just concerned that the lotto website could id that I wasn’t in country.
