I just got 1gbps fiber. So, I’m doing speed tests.
Tests without vpn near the 1gbps.
With vpn:
On android I’m maxing at 200mbps up and down.
On Linux I’m maxing at 300/400 (wireguard) 600/300 (open vpn)
I’ve tested with 3 different paid vpns.
What am I missing here? Can I make changes in my modem to improve this? Anything else?
The first thing to do when testing speeds is to use a VPN server location closest to you. Also, keep in mind that speed test data can vary widely and isn’t always reliable. You could try changing your DNS to the VPN provider’s DNS, Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), or Quad9 (9.9.9.9) to see if that affects your results. If you’re still experiencing speed issues, try using a custom configuration with the standard WireGuard client and adjust the MTU values (if supported by your provider) for further testing. Usually, default settings will work best.
I did use the servers close to me. I’ve tried a whole range of speed tests all coming to the same conclusion (or worse with a few)
I’ll give the tips a few tests.
Whole bunch of testing further.
Linux: Got that fixed easily. Turned out that setting to wireguard somehow failed and got reverted back to open vpn. Set it back to wireguard and it works great. No idea what happened there because the speeds were definitely different. Oh well, works now.
Android: dns changed nothing. Mtu got me a minor boost up to 250mbit. Open vpn got me a boost in download to approx 350mbit. No change in upload.
Turn off vpn and easily measures at 950+ mbit.
Thanks for the update. OpenVPN is usually a bit slower than WireGuard, so it’s interesting to see it’s faster on your mobile device. It might be worth inquiring with your VPN provider about any speed limitations with WireGuard on Android. Glad to hear it’s working well on Linux now!
I’ve tried 3 different vpns and all giving the same results. So, I’m assuming it’s something in my phone.
If you’re getting fast speeds on Linux but not on your phone, it could be a limitation of resources on the handset, but it may also be the WiFi connection. Make sure your phone is connected to the 5GHz WiFi band and that you’re close to the router when testing.
I’m about 3 meters away from the router. On the 5ghz band. It connects the 1gbps well until I’m on vpn, getting 950+ with vpn turned off.
In that case, it’s possible the phone is limiting the speeds. While those speeds aren’t bad, testing on a newer handset could help determine if that’s the problem, as WireGuard can be resource-intensive.
Don’t have a newer set available. I feel like this one (oneplus 8t 12 gb version) should be able to handle it. But at least it would be an explanation.
