VPN Routers and Websites

I have some questions about using VPN in routers:

  • Do VPN routers use shared or static IP addresses?
  • Would websites such as Google trigger Capchas when connected to a VPN router?
  • What are the chances of being blacklisted from a website such as Netflix?
  • Would you get locked out from either PayPal or online banking when being connected to a VPN router?
  • How to avoid these measures while being connected to a VPN router for security purposes?

Are you familiar with using a VPN directly on your device? It’ll be exactly like that.

But your questions:

  • Assuming you mean standard public IP assigned by your ISP, they use exactly that the standard IP assigned by your ISP. VPNs still use the internet to initiate and maintain their VPN tunnel.

  • You want to use a VPN client in your router, and visit sites like Google? Well, capcha will likely be triggered based on your VPN server IP as in the IP you exit and are exposed to the internet. If you’re using a VPN service provider then it’s likely their IPs will trigger capcha.

  • Blacklisted from websites as in not able to use their services? Yeah, with many VPN serverice providers their IPs are known by content providers and may have contracts that require them to block known VPN IPs for geo-restriction agreements. Most major VPN providers will have a few servers that still work with most media providers and you would need to contact their support for more details.

  • PayPal, and some banks might have restrictions against known VPN service providers IPs as a fraud deterrent.

  • Avoiding this issues depends on your goal. You mention security reasons so I’m assuming because you might frequent hotels, or public wifi while away from home. In that situation you best result would be running your own VPN server I you home network and connecting to it from your mobile devices while away using public/hotel/train/plane/etc. wifi.
