VPN effect on the household

I’m looking into getting a VPN, but I’m very unknowledgeable on what kind of effect it would have on the household. I know they’re big for security and private browsing, but would they effect gaming consoles and other devices like that, or would it strictly be for computer use? Thanks!

If you don’t know why you need a VPN you don’t need a VPN

If you set up your VPN in your router, it will impact all computers or devices using internet in your house. If you set up it on one computer, only this computer will be impacted.

The main benefit is to prevent your isp to spy on you and web sites to know your real ip Adresse.

The main inconvenients are a a longer latency, far more captcha and even in some cases web sites or services blocking you (Netflix for instance). You can avoid them by setting up rules for these sites / services not to use the VPN.

(I presume you are talking about commercial VPN, not a VPN you create by yourself)

A VPN secures all devices on your network, including gaming consoles. It might slightly slow speeds, but it’s effective for privacy and security across devices.

A VPN can be used on all devices, not just computers. It might slow down your connection a bit, especially for gaming, but some VPNs offer optimized servers for better speed. You can also set it up on your router to cover the whole household, so all devices are protected

I never understood the power of a VPN until I actually got one. it all depends on the provider and the configurations if were talking about the security of different devices though. If you want to read more generally, just check this post on what is a VPN

Correct, I didn’t know that the VPN could only be on CPUs at first and thought they were instantly tied to the whole network. That makes far more sense, thank you for that explanation.

Ehhh it depends. If you configure it on your router or whatever device is directing all the traffic on your network then yes. But if it’s only being used on one machine, only that machine will use the vpn.

Thanks! Sounds like I didn’t need to bother then. If I ever did get back into torrenting (it’s been years) is there a way to only do a VPN on just one laptop or desktop?

Just download the vpn client, install it and press connect
