Should I still connect to UK VPN servers...?

…after Snooper’s Charter? This is something I haven’t seen discussed (widely) yet.

Within the UK, is it still a good idea to connect to UK servers, or should I go out-of-country, like US or Europe? The draconian measures have made me slightly more paranoid.

It depends a lot on what you’re trying to protect yourself against.

The Snoopers Charter covers residential ISPs and wouldn’t dare interfering with datacenter connections. Any VPN servers in the UK are likely to be in datacenters.

If your VPN provider is not based in the UK, where they could eventually be forced to reveal UK server’s logs, you should be pretty safe in that regard.

Please take all the above with a pinch of salt, but you’re probably okay if you just want to preserve privacy, keep your ISP in the dark or avoid ISP throttling for certain protocols.

Hijacking with a question.

Is Gibraltar classed as the UK?

If anyone is wondering why I ask it’s because I believe IVPN are based in Gibraltar.

I came here to ask the exact same question. Is there a difference between where the company is based and what server you connect to through them? I.e. the company is based overseas but you connect to a UK server, would that then be fine for privacy etc?

I’d now look at it like a US server. Use it when you specifically need a UK one, otherwise avoid.

Its probably best to avoid both US and UK in 90% of cases now, putting them in the same basket as China.

I’m also taking this quite literally, but it’s for ISP’s and mobile providers, thus considering VPN providers aren’t offering the same service, the rules (currently) don’t apply to them anyhow?

I’m only thinking that I’d use a a UK based VPN on the router if I was going to get my girlfriend to use it as well, otherwise appearing as if I was elsewhere might confuse her when it came to shopping or things that geo-locate you.

I’m of the opinion that the Government could get me for whatever fairly easily through whatever means, but I want to reduce the crap within the database from me. One option was run a web crawler for a distributed search engine, such as Majestic 12 to obfuscate or run a VPN.

Pretty sure it’s a Crown Protectorate, like the BVI (British Virgin Islands).

So, no.

Yeah 10 Best VPN Services 2025: Security, Features + Speed is a god to figuring out what to avoid…turns out to be a LOT.

Easier asking what not to avoid…

^Man ^I ^hate ^VPN ^renewal ^time.

Hey,

Nicely put there. The idea of running a distributed search engine is at least interesting!

For the 99%, a VPN would rightly take away most of their worries. It takes you out of the massive data gathering. Now, if you’re targeted by a government then there’s not so much you can do. Sooner or later they’ll get you.

Not a ‘Crown Protectorate’ (assuming you meant Crown Dependency), but Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. Still don’t think the law affects it, nonetheless.

Also I know I’m nitpicking, but British Virgin Islands are British Overseas Territories as well.
