I am fairly upset by this sudden change in what the free plan will allow, and I am trying to decide if I should just bit the bullet and pay for one of the options that lets me have unlimited passwords, or just move to a different password manager.
I’ve been really happy with Dashlane - been Premium since I started, about 2-3 years ago.
I don’t bother with the VPN, because I got a lifetime deal on a different service like 5 years ago.
I like that it’s easy to use, isn’t crazy expensive, and lets me input passwords on all different computers - Mac, PC, Linux, and on my iPhone and iPad. It’s worth it to me.
Dashlane is kind of worth it if you consider it has a somewhat decent VPN with it. Yeah, Hotspot Shield is not the best in terms of privacy but it’s not bad. If you want just a robust password manager with a great UI without the VPN, you might want to check out 1Password.
If you want to stick to free options, you have the following options:
Bitwarden: Great features, unlimited passwords and devices with a very cheap premium tier. The UI is not good though.
Proton Pass: Relatively new and buggy. But has a great UI alongside unlimited passwords and devices.
KeePass Family: Syncs to an encrypted file that you’ll have to sync via Syncthing or similar means. KeePassXC for desktops and KeePassDX for Android.
NordPass: I don’t have much experience with it but the free tier restricts you to a single device. No limitations otherwise.
I was in the same place and then try Bitwarden and Proton Pass. Both really good alternatives, better than Dashlane. I end up staying with Bitwarden
What are you looking at and what do those cost?
I just switched to 1Password. Tried Bitwarden but their app is not so good.
I already have proton vpn though, I really don’t need one from Dashlane
I am currently transitioning to bitwarden, and perhaps you could help me. Is there any way to have a similar set up where I only have to sign in with my long master password once every two weeks or so rather than every day?
In what ways is bitwarden better?
In that case consider my other suggestions. Good luck.
Yeah you can do that, just set up a PIN and/or biometrics and select the option so that the app doesn’t ask for your master password each time.
Open source, for one. Unlimited devices and items on the free plan.
OTPs are not included on the free plan, though, so could be annoying if you currently use Dashlane to generate 2FA tokens. (That said, it’s only $10/yr for the premium plan with TOTP support. Definitely a lot less than Dashlane’s $6.5/mo. / $60/yr.) If DL ever discontinues my “free premium” for being a beta user, I’ll probably go to Bitwarden.
I don’t use passwords like that anyway, I tend to come up with sentences or phrases and just use dash lane as a reminder and auto fill program
What does the free premium plan include under the new changes? I also have it for being a beta tester, although my account just shows “free" plan. Do I have to let them know that they promised me lifetime free premium I beta tested? I had to do that once before. I may just switch to BW in any case.
I confirmed no action is needed for lifetime premium users, regardless of what the app shows as your status. u/lynniam
Let me get back to you by tomorrow if lifetime premium members that show free in their account need to take any action.
I don’t think I can help you, but it looks like /u/Dashlane-Chris is on it in another reply.
My account says “Premium plan” under my email in the Android app sidebar, and if I tap it I get an explanation of what “Your Premium plan (free for life) includes”. I didn’t know there was another kind of beta-tester premium plan that shows up as “free”; that’s weird!
Thanks. Does it give us anything that the new free plan doesn’t have? Like more than 25 passwords?
