PPTP VPNs on Big Sur

Hello,

I’m helping out a small business that uses a PPTP VPN for remote connection to the file server. I recently switched over to macOS and would like to know if there was a (preferably open source) way to connect to PPTP VPNs, or if I’m stuck using my Windows machine or installing Bootcamp.

If it’s helpful, I’m on a 2015 MBP running Big Sur. Thank you!

Don’t use PPTP, it’s deprecated because it sucks for security. L2TP over IPSec and OpenVPN are far better.

What brand of vpn does your company use? Perhaps there’s a different solution to simply login?

Shimo supports PPTP

(though PPTP is a terrible protocol, and you should switch).

Here is a workaround. It uses the Linux PPTP client.

Shimo does not support PPTP on Catalina and higher.

The workaround proposed by Filip Molcik did not work for me and you can see in the comments of the article that it did not work for many. There is a similar one here (not working for me as well).

The only working solution that I found is VPN Tracker 365, in the pre-release version. But it is expensive!

I don’t make those decisions, I’m not full time IT

I’ll ask and get back to you on that one.

Shimo won’t allow creation of the PPTP connections on newer MacOS’es

I use Primo VPN, ti works with pptp.

OK I would HIGHLY recommend it to them then.

He said: he doesn’t get to make those choices. PPTP is still extremely widely used where full security isn’t required.

PPTP support is still necessary for any useful business OS.

Primo VPN

For anyone finding this via a search, just FYI Primo does not seem to work with Big Sur.

Does not work anymore, I have paid and now it’s no use to me, thank god our devops switched protocols.

Well, I wish those businesses the best of luck then. Not requiring a secure connection to their network is a great way to not have a business anymore.

 Not really. Oracle and SAP SE aren’t going anywhere, and they’re riddled with PPTP. Legacy uses abound, and not all require security.
