Open VPN vs. paid Services

Hi - i just bought a new ASUS Router - it has OPenVPN capabilities.

i have some experience with other paid vpn services.

So just a basic question - is openvpn for free ? Or Do i need a paid account - in the background ? How does security differ from paid services ?

Thank You

OpenVPN is free. You don’t need an account whatsoever. In terms of security, it isn’t worse than other services, though thanks to it being open source it’s more secure, because many people all over the world can immediately fix some vulnerabilities if found, rather then waiting I for a company to fix it.

OpenVPN itself is free (as in beer) software, though there may be costs involved in using an OpenVPN service (and if one is free, you have to suspect some ulterior motive).

It’s completely free to use if you run it yourself, though that would negate many of the reasons people use a VPN, as you’d still be working through your own Internet connection.

The reason I personally find it useful is that I can run an OpenVPN server on my home computer, with just the single port it needs punched through my router’s firewall. So my Android 'phone always connects to the world via my own Internet connection, with the connection between it and my home being totally encrypted, so incapable of being snooped by public WiFi services, mobile network, etc. Not only can my 'phone then also use my own DNS server (which I use to block advertising/malware/tracking sites) but it can also connect to anything else on my home network without me having to open more ports on my router.

OpenVPN is simply a protocol and set of software to facilitate VPN connections, it’s unrelated to payment or servers

I use one at home for open wifi networks and traveling abroad. I have a server I run Openvpn Access Server. It’s incredibly easy. You need to figure out if you want to host it directly from your router or host the server on a pc and port forward through the router.

Here’s a tutorial for asus routers.

Look into Openvpn Access Server, very simplistic compared to regular Openvpn. As long as you have a good speed at home, I would use Openvpn. If you use a provider your trusting all your traffic to that provider. Just remember that. Good luck!

open vpn is free but you need to be a nerd to use it its not easy I’m not a coder or what ever the fuck I don’t care if you nerds downvote me but this shit is impossible if you have ADD or ADHD just make it easy what is wrong with a download and then you turn it on why the fk do I need to code or find a BUNCH OF BULLSHIT ?

I read this comment last year and it was what led me to download and learn more about it. I had know about the name openvpn years ago but that’s all I knew. Thanks to your comment I decided to look further into it because your use case hit the nail on the head for me.

I eventually got it set up and working fine from my home computer (as a server) to my phone. It lasted about 3 months working then I changed phones. After about a six month hiatus I tried using one of the client configs on my new phone and it failed to connect.

I tried the setup process for the server and client from 0. Uninstalled everything. Installed the Newest version 2.6.10-I001 and it still doesn’t work . Any idea what could be wrong. Port forwarding still set up and works properly so i guess i can rule that out

Hi - This is really cheap !! Only 10 $ a year ?

I used IPvanish for a while and protonvpn (just on trial for now)

Anyonelse that can recommend widevpn ?

Not everything is easy in life, setting up some stuff may require knowledge or just looking up some instructions - just like many other things. You must be a genuinely ignorant person to get so heated up for not knowing how to use a service, get back to wasting time on Apex.

^ lowk baby’s first c+ project ^

One tip first. Check your router (type 192.168.1.1 into your web browser and log in using the password on the back of the router. [NOT the wifi password]) and see if it has OpenVPN built in. My router has it and I was able to turn it on, download a setup file, and use that to set up the VPN in a few clicks.

OpenVPN is a self-hosted VPN. It is used to create an encrypted connection between a client (e.g. your phone/laptop) and a server(e.g. an old PC you have at home). I’m doing it so we can access shared drives at my workplace from anywhere on the internet with an encrypted connection (normally you would have to be at work to do that).

If you want a NAS system to be accessible from anywhere for let’s say, watching movies, you could host the VPN on your home network where your NAS is and when you’re on a plane flying to Hawaii, you could connect to wifi, enable your VPN, and connect to your NAS at home as if you were home. Everything would be encrypted.

If you’re using OpenVPN because you saw some ad saying you should get a VPN to prevent websites from tracking you, just pay for ExpressVPN or others.

As far as having ADHD, I also have ADHD and I use it to my advantage. I work as an electrical engineer, and I also do mechanical design, programming, and IT. Stop using that as an excuse.

I can only suggest going through client configuration process afain carefully. I changed my 'phone ayear or so ago and had a hell of a job getting the VPN working. But stepping back and working through it I got there. Though I couldn’t now tell you where I’d gone wrong. But my notes on how to get it right next time are

• Copy android.ovpn (client config) to 'phone from vpn config
• Click “plus” icon for a new profile
• Select “Import”
• Edit server address to correct IP address
• Enable LZO compression • Set up DNS servers • un-tick bot• Copy android.ovpn to 'phone from vpn config

• Select “Import”
• Edit server address to correct IP addresd
• Enable LZO compression
• Set up DNS servers
• un-tick both “use default route” boxes

• Edit allowed apps list

Though I don’t know how useful that will be for you

yeah bro ADHD = ignorance autism = ignorance you got me bro mental health really makes you FUCKING IGNORANT what a twat you are

I absolutely disagree that he is ignorant. But I do agree that if you want to use something or make something work, it isn’t very hard to look it up and follow directions. If the directions are stumping you, then look up a video. If you’re still confused about a specific part of it, then google the confusion and add the word reddit. It just takes a little persistence and is perfectly achievable even if you have adhd.

Thanks for the reply. I am now at the point where i have uninstalled and reinstalled everything at least 4 times. Talk about insanity.

I tried from another pc to pc and it connects but i get no traffic. Only like 5kb transfer on connection but no real traffic. It says connected but that clearly ain’t doing anything.

I will try again later and kill some more time with it.

No one asked, You’re out here spilling your life story on a topic about VPNs. We’re not therapists so take your shitty attitude somewhere else if you want pitty for being a victim.

My point is that like setting up a network, you can’t just make it so that you connect two cables and that’s good to go, or just anything. It is surely not clever to get so heated up because ‘stuff is impossible to use without having studied something in depth’.

mans out here replying to a month old comment that don’t even involve him AINTNOWAY

Aren’t you initially replying to a 2y old post? Honestly, I expected a better reply from someone who’s so mentally unhinged.

Like a month goes by and you’re suddenly a new person? Gtfo

all i hear is some bullshit dribbling from someone who has anger issues maybe you need to take a break from the internet if ur so hostile
