Nord disconnecting my phone network? More info in comments
The photo above shows my phone network as disconnected, and this is ONLY happening while Nord is open and active. I’m not sure what happened, but the last few months whenever Nord is connected on my phone, it disconnects my cell phone network entirely. I can’t send OR receive calls, or texts. The only way for me to be able to send or receive texts and phone calls is to disconnect the Wi-Fi, or I can disconnect Nord and that will fix it too.
I’ve tried everything I can think of. Nord is fully up to date on my phone. No matter what server I connect to this still happens. It’s driving me nuts because I want to leave Nord open 24/7 on my phone, but I can’t because it keeps disconnecting me from my cell phone network. Anyone got any advice?
Obviously, I’ve attached the photo on this post so you can see that it literally says no service, and shows my network as disconnected. If I turn off Nord or disconnect Wi-Fi, it’ll go back to normal and reconnect to the phone network as expected.
Go to NordVPN settings, turn off metered connection. Then go to your phone settings>Network and Internet>Adaptive Connectivity is ON
Make sure the hotspot is turned off. Disable Wifi calling and make sure “Allow 2G” is off too. Turn off the data saver if you have that on.
Go to Settings on Android > Network and Internet > VPN > NordVPN > Disable “Always-on VPN”.
Lastly make sure android is up to date. There was the January update that just came out and make sure the play store is up to date too. Android settings > security > update them both.
I hope this helps, I’m just going out on a limb here since we have similar phones.
Reaching out to support is going to be the best path forward, but if you want some other ideas then this is what I would try:
- Make sure the app is up-to-date with the latest version.
- Restart your phone.
- Turn CyberSec off. If you installed from the Google Play Store, this option probably won’t exist for you. If there is no CyberSec option, it is off.
- Make sure you have all the APNs (access point names) for your cellular carrier set under Android settings > WiFi and Network > (some phones you have to click More Settings) > SIM and Network > SIM Settings > Access Point Names. You can find the APNs for your carrier with Google, on their website, or by going to a store and asking someone. In my experience, it is okay to enter multiple, and it is okay to leave ones in that were put there by your manufacturer if they aren’t listed by your carrier. Just follow the instructions from the carrier.
- Try turning local network discovery on.
- Try clearing app cache for NordVPN.
- Try using a different DNS provider as configured in the NordVPN app, like CloudFlare’s
1.1.1.1
or Google’s8.8.8.8
. - Try using the DNS provider suggested by your carrier (though I recommend against this beyond just troubleshooting for a minute).
- Try clearing app cache and data for NordVPN. You will have to login again.
- If you installed NordVPN from the Google Play Store, try uninstalling that and installing the version on their website - or vice versa. Ultimately the version from their website is better because it has options banned by Google from the Play Store, like ad blocking.
