So, my main problem is that my university started a heavy censorship program that resulted in making the life of students on campus horrible. Jokes aside, there is not a single VPN that is working (we tried some who were free and others that we subscribed to). Just for naming a few, there’s NordVPN (choosing TCP doesn’t change anything, as well as connecting via IKEv2. I also tried using OpenVPN on my smartphone, but same result), HideMyAss (my friend), ExpressVPN (another friend), Hotspot Shield (free version), CyberGhost (free version), Windscribe and Stealth VPN (free/mobile app). You get the idea, nothing is working. So I expected a lot from ExpressVPN and NordVPN mostly, because they’re said to bypass the Great Firewall of China, but apparently my university is surpassing China by eons. So my main question is, do you guys happen to know of any VPN that could possibly bypass my university restrictions? I thought of VyprVPN (due to fact that they have their proprietary Chameleon protocol for DPI) but honestly, I’m on a point were I doubt everything.
Setup a wireguard server in the cloud, you can try multiple udp ports to listen on, might find one that they don’t block.
You could try a $5vps on Digital Ocean
TorGuard has a ton of different port options you can choose that can bypass normal firewalls, as well as stunnel, and additional proxies within the client. Have you tried it yet? It’s highly regarded here, and its on the top of my tier list. ive also made videos on how to configure the features, PM me if interested
In all seriousness here, most of the newer firewalls utilize some type of database that has categories such as anonymizing proxies/vpns, tor exit nodes, and anything related to this topic that you can think of. To make matters worse, these signatures are updated quite frequently and even when new services come around or ones that no one has heard of, it’s still either on the list or will be shortly. If that’s the case here, you will likely need to get creative and roll your own via hosted services in the cloud from someone like digital ocean or some other VPS provider. If all you are worried about is keeping your browsing habits and aren’t doing anything borderline illegal (DMCA content downloading, etc), lighting up a droplet on digital ocean is about $5 a month and you can configure openvpn easily enough.
I’m using outline and so far, so good. It’s easy to deploy on any VPS. DM me if you need help.
Take a look at AirVPN dot org and read their specs page. They have multiple ports on TCP, UDP, SSL and SSH. Check their forum for advice too.
You can try Bestnet VPN, but it is only available for iPhone
VPN unlimited has their own stealth protocols to bypass shite like this. Can you try em out and let me know?
I used this script to setup a ovpn server on my VPS. Use tcp port 443.
So to help everyone out there, in case your university wants to make life a hell for you, this is what I did. I asked NordVPN to give me the configuration files to use on WireGuard. Since WireGuard is in early development and not known by everybody, the protocol was not blocked by my university. I’m able to connect easily and get very fast speeds. If your VPN supports WireGuard, I’m sure you can bypass almost every firewall.
I would say to try Tor Guard VPN they have a 50% coupons online so it comes out to like five dollars for one month.
Thank you for the advice. I’m learning new things here :p. I’ll do some research and get back to you guys on Monday.
Yup, coupon TGdiscount50 gives -50% lifetime discount. TorGuard has port forwarding features and tools to bypass school firewall so I’d say it’s a good choice.
Never heard of it. I’ll make sure to check it out on Monday, thank you!
Whatever works, don’t share it around. Your adversaries are watching traffic and anything that looks prominent will get special attention.
I remember reading a while back on this subreddit that someone used wireguard over Port 53 DNS and that was the only way they could get past their universities blocking.
It’s a decent free VPN run by one of the local redditors. Not sure how advanced it is though.
