I have a limited data plan and so I do my game updates via wifi. I recently had a problem where my campus began blocking the LN update servers but not the game server itself. (I don’t know WHY they started doing this and I don’t care enough to find out.) At first I went off-campus to run the updates but that was too much of a hassle. So my next strategy was to download a program called Orbot. Vanilla Orbot didn’t work but if I put Orbot into “VPN mode” it worked like a charm to evade whatever blocking mechanism is being put into place. Other VPNs might work as well, I didn’t try them.
So FYI, if you ever find yourself in a similar position.
All VPN will work. Technical explain: VPN means virtual private network. When you are using VPN it “builds” tunnel to the some place at world. Your campus wifi only see this tunnel and cannot access to any data you send by it. On this place is server which send and receive data from place you like(in this case ln update server).
However I strongly recommend using only trusted VPN, and only with not so important data(ln update is ok) because they have access to everything you send. You mustn’t login into bank account or anything like there because it is dangerous. So… Be careful and do not use shaddy VPNs. Only really trusted ones.
I’m on android and I use x-vpn. It’s from a reputable company (from my brief research) that also offers premium accounts. It does work (can finally read manga at work, yay), has great speeds and you can connect to various places (Pandora only likes US servers for me, otherwise won’t work). So for anyone else who has this problem (or similar) and is on android, I very much recommend X-VPN (and it’s free!!)
