Is there really any difference between the deep and dark web?

I heard that there is a difference between the deep and dark web where the deep web is apart of the internet that can’t be indexed by search engines such as google and to access it you need special authorization where as the dark web is the small portion of the deep web where you need a software such as Tor to access it. But then, I hear others say that there isn’t a difference between the deep and dark web and when I see YouTube videos of people accessing the deep web, they are using Tor. If there is a difference, how do you access the deep web?

Yes there is a difference. See this computerphile episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joxQ_XbsPVw) for more information.

Short version is like you said things that aren’t indexed by google. This could be your facebook page that you set to private. Your bank home screen that you have to login to access or simply a web page that just got put up but no one has linked to so search engines don’t know about it.

The dark web is a web that speaks a different language than normal. While an oversimplification your normal web browser might go to reddit.com and say “Hello” and the website will reply back. On Tor dark web sites end in .onion. To connect to an onion website your browser must “speak” onion so that if your normal browser (chrome, firefox) tries to connect a “Hello” isn’t going to work because the website so to speak that language.

As to the people who say they are the same or interchangeable, in a surface level discussion they might be. An analogy might be in the gun world when people say a magazine and a clip are the same thing (they aren’t). Two people who know nothing about guns may be able to have a conversation using the terms incorrectly and it’s fine. But if you are using the incorrect terms around people who know better you are going to annoy them and it lets them know you don’t know what you are talking about or have a very superficial level of knowledge.

Deep is not registered to show up on a search engine. Dark requires special software to access like Tor or the I2P router.

Tomato ta-mato.
Their both interchangeable imo.

Tor, VPN is the basic. Other things you can do for safety. Not changing web browsers size, I’m not to knowledgeable tho

Guys. We have a TorUser here…

To connect to an onion website your browser must “speak” onion.

That’s a good way to put it.

The people that annoys don’t have the correct priorities. Who the heck cares if you mix up vernacular for a stripper clip or magazine.

You know most veterans used to m1 garands continued to call magazines clips for the rest of their lives into the 1970s because that’s the term they where used too.

Separately, It literally has happened on the Sean Ryan show by people who know their shit.

both still can’t be accessed through a normal search engine and still need to be accessed with multiple encryption devices. One thing needing more encryption doesn’t mean anything. It’s still dark and away from the rest of the surface-level internet. Plus, dark web is a much cooler name than deep web.

It’s really not. Deep web means the web not indexed by search engines, like your bank Home Screen, but the dark web is only accessible by certain browsers or methods that is essentially another “layer” of the internet for lack of a better phrase. This layer uses things like .onion links and multiple servers to circumvent censorship and achieve (at least close to) anonymity.

Everyone here is a Tor user

you still need more servers and encryption devices to access the deep web, though. It’s still dark and hidden from the surface internet. Many still need to be anonymous on it for safety and protection. Some sites needing more security is no different from some surface internet sites that need additional security to access.
