I don’t want that VPN and Speedup or whatever crap it comes with to be installed
If memory serves, it’s an all or nothing installation, but you can uninstall the VPN afterward. I’m not normally anti any av software, but Avira free is a mess. Its sole aim is to get you to upgrade.
A far quieter and simpler free av would be Kaspersky Security Cloud Free or Kaspersky Free (depending on your location). Security Cloud Free includes two trial add-ons (a password manager and VPN), but both are easily removed.
If, as written in your other comment, you have the old version of Bitdefender installed, you can readily upgrade to Bitdefender’s latest free version. I’d say Kaspersky was a stronger, quieter choice, but the new Bitdefender Antivirus Free offers decent protection without much fuss.

Alternatively, switch to the free AVs from either Kaspersky or Bitdefender.
As already stated by two guys Avira free can’t be readily recommended.
Three better options which provide outstanding protection for free are Wisevector Stopx, Kaspersky and Comodo Antivirus (Comodo not for Rookie PC users though).
Installed it but I have the old ui?
Wow. WiseVector is looking amazing. Thanks
The ‘new UI’ I think you’re referring to was just their launcher, which came with all the bundled crap.
Oh u installed it? Good to hear that u are pleased.
Do note that it does not have any phishing protection which is a big con but not a big deal for a Free AV. U can install Browser Extensions from Avira, Bitdefender, Avast and Malwarebytes for phishing protection.
I don’t think so. The new ui doesn’t launch that “filewalker” crap when it detects a virus
Is unblock origin chrome extension and CloudFlare DNS good enough for phishing protection?
You’ve already detected malware on your system?
Nope.
They would have a detection rate of not more than 70%
Is a chrome extension really required for phishing protection. I use Norton without its chrome extension and when in chrome I click on a bad link i still get a popup warning from Norton that it blocked the attack. Does that mean Norton gives you the same protection with or without chrome extension?
Ah, kk.
I’d suggest contacting support to see if there’s a more up to date/different standalone installer. If there is, let me know.
