Is PubMed down?

I have been trying to access PubMed for the last several hours, but the site appears to be down. Has anyone being able to access it?

If they’re permanently taking down pubmed, I am changing specialties to riotologist.

Entire NIH.gov site appears to be down.

Edit: looks like it’s back up, for now

It is down globally.(edit: back up for me, Monday 7:30 CET)

*** Here are some alternatives, especially non-US based, since the kleptocratic coup there is dismantling the country:

  1. Europe PMC (europepmc.org) – A European alternative to PubMed, supported by the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). It includes many of the same articles as PubMed but also integrates additional sources.
  2. Cochrane Library (cochranelibrary.com) – Specializes in systematic reviews and meta-analyses in medicine.
  3. EMBASE (embase.com) – A European biomedical database with more extensive coverage of pharmacology and drug research than PubMed.
  4. CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) – Focuses more on nursing and allied health sciences.
  5. Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) – Not exclusively medical but widely used for academic research, including medical literature.
  6. World Health Organization’s Global Index Medicus (globalindexmedicus.net) – Aggregates health literature from different global regions, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries.
  7. LIVIVO (livivo.de) – A German biomedical literature database.
  8. Scopus (scopus.com) – A large multidisciplinary research database that includes medicine and health sciences.

It’s been sporadic for me all day. I wonder what’s happening on the back end. Probably nothing good.

There have been dns problems with nih.gov and pubmed all day yesterday and apparently still today. If you change your dns to one of the green check mark ones here it should work.

They may have changed some records and it hasn’t propagated to all dns servers yet so some still work. It did start working with google and quad9 last night but not today. It’s sporadic.

Edit:
Google dns, which is what most people are probably using, occasionally works. One of the flunkies could be trying to learn about networking.

I was also struggling trying to read an article. Hoping it’s temporary, because my paper ain’t going to write itself.

Probably related to Musk firing 18F Friday:

I think DOGE is working on it. It will be back up soon.

Edit: working as in propaganda bs lol

I had to change my DNS server. Now it works again

DNS servers are down. Someone posted a workaround: Bluesky

i genuinely burst into tears over it whoopsie

Just if anyone needs an alternative the Europe PMC is still up and working: https://europepmc.org/

MedPage Today has a 2/26/2025 opinion piece about a possible PubMed risk if you’re interested.
The author is Katie Suleta, DHSc, MPH, MS

It’s probably alarmist, but it does a good job of laying out the ramifications of interference with or loss of PubMed access.

It’s been down all day.

Please bear with us while we rename all therapeutic interventions to ivermectin on pubmed.

I posted this yesterday! Yeah, it’s been fucky. I saw something about it having maintenance, but there’s a fuckton of reddit posts in other places such as r/bioinformatics and r/nih

I have struggled all weekend with pubmed. Grant due March 5! Really frustrating.

You can use Litref as an alternative!
