Is ProtonVPN ever going to add custom DoT/DoH DNS support?

I’d really like to use ProtonVPN, but that means it’ll force its own DNS service which is understandable since it’s required to prevent information leakage during the process. However, would it be possible if ProtonVPN had a built-in control to override the default Proton DNS where user could replace it with their own?

For example, I’d like to use ProtonVPN for encryption of the traffic, but would prefer to have a much more granular control of another DNS service which has DoT/DoH support.

I’ve tried several means to achieve this in the past on my iPhone and they were all ridiculously overcomplicated and ultimately didn’t work in the end. Which is super annoying. However, if ProtonVPN had option for it inside its own app, then no one would have to go through weird hacks to achieve it. You’d just enter DoT/DoH address inside ProtonVPN settings and that would be it. ProtonVPN would encrypt traffic and use said DNS service to do the resolving. I’m aware it’s not that secure/private, but at this point I’m willing to accept that compromise just to make it work.

I really wish they can add this feature. Since they have settings for a Custom DNS. I wish they can improve it. I want to use NextDNS rather than enable the alternate routing which uses Google’s DNS (as one of the alternative routing). I would prefer what I am familiar with.

Also, it seems that NextDNS is way better and more matured at mitigating ads tracker and malware compared to ProtonVPN’s. Also a bit faster in response from my random benchmarks. Tried using NextDNS’ IPv4 server on the Custom DNS then running speedtest.

Take a look at IVPN. They have DoH/DoT support on their iOS app and they’re a great VPN provider as well. Very open and transparent

I have my reasons because DNS I use has features ProtonVPN just doesn’t have. But obviously, DNS doesn’t have functionality ProtonVPN has. That’s why.

Very interesting read thanks for the information

Report this directly to them, so maybe they’ll listen to you. I’m on the same boat.

Well, I don’t want to use any other VPN, particularly not one I never heard of like ever.

What are those features?

IVPN is a top notch VPN just like ProtonVPN

I understand the concern but it is a reputable VPN. It is a VPN that is recommended by WireCutter, PrivacyTools, PrivacyGuides, and other reputable sites. Like ProtonVPN, and Mullvad, IVPN is open-source, they have routine audits, they’re transparent about the ownership and operation of the company. They are very transparent about what a VPN can and cannot do for you. They are not a NordVPN, ExpressVPN, PIA, StrongBPN, etc. type company.

I know it’s not DoH support in Proton, but IVPN is a good alternative to ProtonVPN. The DoH support on IVPN’s iOS app works well, I use it myself with NextDNS without any issues. Custom DoH support is not available on their Android app. One downside to IVPN is they have a small number of servers, and most streaming services block IVPN’s servers (if streaming support matters)

Protective features, pre-made blocklists as well as full user controlled block lists, address redirections, analytics and logs.

Maybe try AdGuard Home ?
I’m using it on my router with PVPN
