Is it bad that the most popular VPNs all lease the same servers?

So I’ve either done a free trial or 1 month plan with just about every major VPN out there, and I’ve been publishing the results on my website whoisyourvpn.com

But I’ve been thinking, is it inherently bad that all these VPNs are basically the same servers behind the scenes? (Note: I understand that there is much more to this i.e. subscription data, payment data, device data, etc etc)

For instance, 99% of the servers I’ve tested are running on:

  • M247
  • Datacamp Limited / CDN77 / CDNext
  • Cogent
  • GSL
  • GTT
  • Performive

I believe that this level of centralization is bad for a variety of reasons. It increases the likelihood that a bad actor could hijack an overwhelming portion of VPN traffic and also reduces the redundancy if there were to be DDoS attacks or network/infrastructure failure.

all lease the same servers?

You mean, all lease servers from the same hosting companies ?

I wonder how many data centers each hosting company has ? If they have a lot, that would ease some of the fear of “network/infrastructure failure”.

The VPN I use has servers in 62 countries, for example. So I assume 62 data centers. Chance of many of them going down at same time is low.

To my knowledge, I know some of those are ISPs, huge global ones at that. What makes you think they’re hosted at the same DCs?

Not “bad”, but obviously makes it easier to block.

Your site seems to be a bit broken. Would like to check your findings though.

Yes, I know, should have said “how many data centers each hosting company uses”.
