Installing Mullvad VPN on a Chinese iPhone

I am a videographer traveling through China at the moment, and I have made some local friends.

They have asked to follow me on social media to see what I produce, however, I am only posting to YouTube and Instagram. Both of which are blocked here in China, along with most VPN apps.

After explaining to them, what a VPN was, I was able to install Mullvad on my Chinese friends Android phone by downloading the APK on my phone, putting it onto a USB flash drive and inserting it into his phone and installing it. The Mullvad website was blocked on his phone as well but I was able to sign him up to an account using my phone.

I have now made a new local friend who also wants to follow me on YouTube/Instagram but because they have an iPhone, I am unable to side load the Mullvad app like on android.

If I search for the app in the App Store, nothing comes up. And if I find the app on apps.apple.com it just says “app not available in your region”

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get around this?

For now what you could try is making a hotspot using the vpn, I know windscribe has that feature but don’t know if it’s available for the iphone though. And let them follow you. You could also try search engine like startpage.com that can proxy you or try to use tor or a website that does proxy so they can at least open the social media on the web browser and them looking into a different/better solution later on.

To bypass restrictions in China, you can use WireGuard, it’s very simple to set up.

On the Mullvad website, once you’re logged into your account, you just need to generate the configuration file and import it.

If you need help, I can try to make a tutorial here in the comments with screenshots, but I use Android (I believe the steps are the same on iOS).

You should logout of that iCloud account that has it set to china, and then login to a non-china app store user account, you should be able to download the Mullvad app. (Remember to log back in the original iCloud account afterwards)

Thought poster was asking about both didn’t read too carefully, it’s even easier to install from iOS App Store just change your region in App Store on iPhone and then search Mullvad then it’s there
