I’ve been living in different SEA countries for the past 6 months. My main US banks do not require travel notes, so I’m guessing they’re using my phone location to inform them where I am. If I now start using a VPN (and many do not have servers in my current country), could this cause banking issues/ security alerts on my cards because I’m futzing with my location?
I know I’m making a lot of guesses here, but I don’t know how my banks know to authorize purchases in a different country/ city location on a monthly basis, so I’m guessing it has to be related to where my phone is. I’ve been in SEA for the past 2 years (only started moving around 6 months ago) and it’s a royal pain if a card gets cancelled, so my priority is to not futz with their formula. However, for the first time in those 2 years I’m in an apartment with a shared wifi connection (shared with the other apartment on this floor) so I’m looking at using a VPN. Maybe the best solution here is to only use my banking apps on mobile data, or find a VPN with servers in my current country?
