How safe is Radmin to use on student WiFi?

I share WiFi with about 300 people. My friend said we needed to use Radmin to play foundry cuz his isp doesn’t allow port forwarding. It feels like it’s dangerous. My pc said that I should not use the app on a public WiFi.

radmin is a RAT (remote access tool) it’s a legit software

if you’re trying to connect to a server, use a private VPN

What is it? A VPN?

Looks pretty normal to me at first glance.

I’d recommend something like Zero Tier or Hamachi. It creates a Virtual network that makes your computer think any computer in the network is in your LAN.

Removes the need for port forwarding

If it is your personal laptop on a public/private WiFi it is fine. I helped set up a few schools network during Covid and I was amazed at how terrible they were. For some reason I thought schools were locked down but that was not the case. Schools usually use grant money and the IT people are stuck with trying make it all work.

It’s a VPN, but also let’s you connect to others for gaming, like hamachi

R admin is a remote access tool from what I saw. Are you sure you’re friend isn’t trying to hack you?

Edit: Not a rat

Why not use hamachi? I’ve used it many years ago, it works fine

Radmin is commonly used in place of hamachi for gaming, I’ve seen it a lot for people in unfortunate situations with their isp. Why they don’t just use hamachi I don’t really know…

Edit: it’s important to note that the RAT is a separate product from the VPN.

It’s to help us all connect to his foundry (DnD game). I’m pretty sure he’s not hacking but I’m not a fan of taking risks like that

Hamachi is great. Used it back in 2009ish a lot. Still in high school at the time and we knew the admin password so we were able to make changes to C drive. We’d bring a USB in with starcraft on it, drop it in the public documents folder, download Hamachi on everyone’s PC and have sick 4v4 LAN games in the library. Fingers of course hovering over alt-F4 the entire time.

Uninstall starcraft, Hamachi and remove starcraft.exe from public documents and nobody knew anything different.

It now requires an account

Yeah I see that now, thanks for the correction.

Looks like a managed VPN service. Should be okay since it’s a professional service I guess. Could be wrong but initial look seems okay.

Still use it only if you trust them. Getting on the same network can expose ports of your system that are normally unavailable from the internet.

If they are ready to put a little work in, you can take a look at cloudflare tunnel. That will bring foundry onto the internet but it will take some setting up and research of they are not familiar with cloudflare.

While it’s probably safe, just want to add that AnyDesk, TeamViewer, etc, are all professional services and have all been used by scammers in the past. Just because it’s a “legit company” doesn’t mean it’s being used legitly

Absolutely true. Trust of source is very important.

To clarify who are you connecting to and if they are trustworth.
