How does opera store my data in their servers?

I haven’t logged in to opera mini and am using it as an alternative browser to watch mangas and stuff as it compresses data like no other. But I am pretty sure it keeps those data in their server. So if don’t login what do they exactly keep about me? And is the rumour about them being selling our data to china true? Are they following Norwegian law or Chinese?

See Terms of Service and Opera Privacy Statement

Hello! Opera is headquartered and registered in Oslo, Norway, so we adhere to Norwegian laws. All Opera user data is kept on servers in the European Union, for example in the Netherlands and Poland.

Opera does not sell data to any third party, government, or authority.

Compressed data from Opera Mini is kept on Opera servers for up to 45 days and deleted afterwards. If you don’t log in, we have no data that can identify you as a person specifically - we only see a browser instance. You can find more information in our Privacy Statement. Hope this helps!

I work in computer technical support. I use Opera (along with several other browsers for different purposes) but always through a good quality VPN (Virtual Private Network).

The VPN creates a ‘tunnel’ into the Internet and thus hides my IP address. So, if the browser collects any information about me (such as my computer type, or my phone’s unique ID) that data cannot be traced back to me.

Using a VPN also prevents your ISP (Internet Service Provider) from being able to read your data traffic. They can see that you’re using a VPN but that’s all they can know about you.

The data you enter into a webpage is also safe (private) as long as the web address starts with ‘https’. The S is important. If it’s there it means that all communications between you and the website are encrypted. Of course you have to trust the website, but as long as it’s a reputable one your data should be safe.

It’s true that Opera boasts that it has its own VPN, but don’t trust that on its own. It’s not a real VPN at all. I think it’s there to give some people a false sense of security so that they’re unguarded about their Internet usage.

In conclusion:
(1) Subscribe to a high quality VPN (research ‘Best VPNs in 2024’) and …
(2) ONLY go to ‘https’ websites.

Bon chance! :crossed_fingers:

So the data is stored even if the login isn’t done but it’s just stored under anonymously…Thanks for the help. When you delete all the data, is there no way to get it back after 45 days forever?

Hi. That’s correct - and even if a user was logged in, the compressed data is still not associated with that user log-in. The data is kept on the server only for up to 45 days and only for technical purposes, such as debugging and system improvements. After 45 days, the data is deleted and is unrecoverable.

Thanks. That’s a strong move for privacy.
