How can I verify the VPN is working properly?

I checked my IP and it seems to show the same as the vpn but when I went to a site that used my location it had me within a block of my house. Not on mobile, I expected to see the location of the IP from the VPN.

Additionally, how can I verify my traffic is not visible to my service provider?

Thanks.

I do appreciate the reply and will get after this as soon as I have a chance. Thanks!

Holy shit you were a gem! Thank you!!

There are a bynch of different end suffixes with the same media.peerconnection

eg media.peerconnection.ice.obfuscate_host_addresses
media.peerconnection.ice.obfuscate_host_addresses.blocklist

media.peerconnection.ice.tcp

do i need to false them all or?

I would check for leaks as suggested here. You should also be realistic in your expectations as it’s relatively easy to be tracked even with a VPN. You should be fine in regards to certain activities.

your data, is already owned, and sold by multiple companies like google

root your phone

iron

Those activities are possibly the ones I’m concerned about. Moving largeish amounts of data around.

Brave browser. First on a weather site where I click allow until I close the window. Then on the above mentioned leak check site. Both hit on my block but the wrong address. Still seems like a leak of some sort.

It’s fine provided you don’t have any DNS leaks for that specifically. You should have a killswitch setup and test it regularly anywhere from daily to weekly when you get a chance. User error on setup/config is usually the culprit (several times for me) or an update/conflict comes into play. If you want to be extra safe make sure to not have anything personal or account-wise on there. Naming conventions as well like your actual name or the dog etc.

EDIT: Depending on your situation there are several guides or walkthroughs you can use to help you on your journey. PiA users have the forums and some guides using their clients. OpenVPN does as well using many of the most popular services. Oh and don’t forget there are specific app settings to utilize a connection strictly through a VPN. Web browsers have had this for millennia or forever.

Browser is likely the culprit. Brave is okay overall better than straight-up Chrome. If you’re using a VPN client from the provider or OpenVPN you might not be routing all traffic including the web browser through the proper TAP. It might require manual configuration or an extension (turn it on/off). Do you also happen to be logged in to any personal accounts or google in your browser? That’s a security risk. Mega corps and most likely governments can take anonymous metadata and match it to the profiles of our habits to us specifically. Completion97 also mentioned webrtc among other things these companies or state actors use to eventually identify us even if it’s all anonymous. We are creatures of habit.

I’m 100% sure im logged into something in one of those 60 tabs. Currently my goal is to just obscure a few GB of data I’m moving.

This is my first time on a VPN but that makes total sense. I will look up the other things. Thank you.

I would also make sure you have certain transfers of data set up using the VPN TAP. There will likely be a setting to choose what network adapter to use in the connection settings of whatever you’re using to do that. You might see it listed as for example Private Internet Access Windows TAP or Wireguard Tunnel. YMMV.
