How can I play on Korea server without lagging them to all hell (I’m in the US). Would a VPN help? Are there any tricks outside of moving there?
Modify the speed of light to be faster
Vpn only adds more latency, routing traffic through another server. Besides having the best internet possible, there is not much to be done. Remove any latency on your end by switching from wifi to ethernet maybe. It won’t change much.
A couple previous Reddit threads touch on this subject, maybe you’ll find something helpful there (one of them talks about port forwarding, which is easy to set up and worth a try):

Are you referring to ladder or custom games? Custom games with koreans then maybe shieldbattery would give you an improved experience. The ladder is global, the regions themselves are not actually servers so for dealing with ladder lag then you might just have to prayge for closer opponents.
(It also helps to avoid playing on wifi since that will induce packet loss, direct ethernet connections are your friend.)
It’s kindof amazing it works as well as it does considering how far away Korea is. If you ever take a train trip or a car trip from the east coast to the west coast of the US, you will really start to appreciate the vastness of the distance your signal is traveling.
edit: disregard my math was terrible
Play ladder games. The ladder matchmaker tries to set you up with players in such a way as to minimize lag. And it’s a global ladder, so if there are people in Europe, maybe northeast Russia, or Asia more generally who, for some reason, have a faster connection with you… the ladder will set you up in games with those people.
Reminds me of the Next Generation episode with Q: “Simple: change the gravitational constant of the universe”
Speed of electrons. The speed at which electrons move through copper cables is actually much slower than the speed of light through a vacuum.
Once we’re in the realm of changing fundamental constants of physics, it’s probably going to be easier to change broodwar’s netcode. It’s almost certainly possible to play TR24 Low between US and Korea with optimized netcode and server infrastructure.
This is not true in Europe, because you can use low latency overland routing through Chinese ISPs, making the latency much better to Korea with a Chinese VPN.
Depends how the routing is.
The speed of light is around 3250ish miles per second.
No, it’s more like 186,000 miles per second.
This isn’t about the speed of light, it’s about routing packets.
Derp. I did a big dumb.
