Hotspot and VPN

For the IT security gurus, here is the situation:

I have two phones, one work (iPhone) and one personal (Android). The former has one VPN installed by work, and the latter has on my own VPN subscription.

The question :

When I’m travelling, with both VPNs on, and using the work phone as the Hotspot for data, can my employer and/or the ISP still see what I’m downloading, browsing etc.?

No, and hotspots usually bypass vpns

If they bypass VPNs then they can see it, no?

How would they bypass your vpn? I didn’t know this was possible as the traffic is encrypted via some form of tunnel, if this is true it makes vpn’s pretty useless, I have killswitch turned on incase anything trys bypass my vpn but I’m bot so sure now, could you fill me in on how they bypass your vpn pls in a more technical way, I need to know this for my opsec, thank you for your time.

What? Devices connected through the hotspot will not have access to the vpn on the device which makes the hotspot

Its the os, android and iOS simply ignore VPN connection when you share your internet through USB or WiFi hotspot. Other devices connected to your hotspot will have direct internet access

Sorry, just to be clear: so the ISP/workplace CAN see the websites visited?

Good to know for sure, dam and I been using vpn for more than 10yrs and didn’t know this, and bet others didn’t too, thanks for the heads up.

If you connect to any other vpn on your personal device then no, I was just telling you that your work vpn will not work on other connected devices

Okay got it. That’s clear, thank you.
