For those who are aware of the events in New Caledonia

About a week ago, a mess started in New Caledonia (an overseas possession of France). I won’t explain everything in detail, there are tons of articles about it on Reddit, but in brief, they started banning all communication channels and such, including Tiktok. Do they really think Tiktok is such a threat? Rather this question is directed to those who are from the EU. Do you think this will be a catalyst for banning Tiktok etc. in the EU?

“Do they really think Tiktok is such a threat?”

Yes (Likely based on research and sources such as Misunderstood mechanics: How AI, TikTok, and the liar’s dividend might affect the 2024 elections | Brookings / Misinformation makes its way to TikTok - Poynter / Health information on TikTok: The good, the bad and the ugly | Biological Sciences Division | The University of Chicago (uchicago.edu) )

“Do you think this will be a catalyst for banning Tiktok etc. in the EU?”

I hope so but doubt it, eventually it’s my opinion that misinformation should be an offense for any platform

Give them an occasion and they’ll block anything, that’s simple

And that’s where… comes in.

Not Tik Tok but related to what you mentioned. A Russia-linked network uses AI to rewrite real news stories

Good stories to share, thanks. Found them insightful. The problem with TikTok specifically is, in my opinion, as with any social media, the combination of patterns that are addicting and the misinformation.

The combination of those two, and that also goes for Facebook, Twitter / X / MuskNet / Instagram etc. TikTok is just insanely popular and doesn’t seem to do a whole lot against it.
