I’m currently living at my sisters place and renting so we share wifi but I don’t really want them seeing what I’m doing online and I’d like some privacy.
Would a VPN hide my history if they were to search for it? Wasn’t sure if it had me completely off the net or not.
It would hide your network traffic. If someone was keeping tabs on the home router all they would see is you communicating with the VPN server. A VPN would prevent them from seeing what sites you are actively visiting.
Chances are that nobody in your house is monitoring that anyway. Most home routers don’t keep web traffic logs (very little disk space) unless they’re specifically running some kind of parental filtering/monitoring feature or a local DNS proxy like Adguard, and even then, the logs are typically short term (again, very little disk space for logs on a typical cheap home router).
Yes, assuming they only have router logs. It won’t stop them snooping your device physically so make sure you have a new pin set and the screen auto lock after a minute.
Strictly speaking even without a VPN they will only see you’re opening, say, google then pornhub, so they won’t know what exact queries you’re looking.
No it won’t hide anything on your device, you need to put extra things in place for that and even then you carnt hide everything. Big bro is watching you mwah haha.
No. Your search history can be brought up from your search engine (if you’re using Google Search, Bing, etc) if you’re logged into the search engine service.
Your browser history can still be viewed by going to History (or whatever it’s called) in your web browser.
Browsing in incognito mode and not logging into google or using duck duck go is how you don’t retain a search history. If you’re doing piracy then a vpn works well in not getting any notices sent to whoever pays for the internet.
No. Everything on the computer locally is still viewable, history, cookies etc. Incognito mode in a browser will help hide this.
All a VPN does is tunnels all your outgoing/incoming requests through an anonymous server. So instead of the ISP/outside network seeing your IP address looking at weird porn, it goes to thru an anonymized server and is encrypted coming from there to your computer so they can’t identify what is going where.
I’m not trying to hide it from my device, I already know it wont hide it on my device. I’m just concerned about my sister seeing me visiting pirating websites on the home network.
Even without a VPN, since most sites and apps use HTTPS then only the destination server can see your queries, what subs you’re in, what videos you’re watching, your username, password etc. The whole “if you don’t use a VPN then you’re not protected” is just VPN companies’ scaremongering.
In this case, while other are not going to have real evidence, there can definitely be significant hint they can observe due to the high volume of traffic.
I don’t think ur sister would care if u pirate something, mine doesn’t. And even if, I don’t think she’s gonna read all that to see what ur up to. But idk who ur sister is so don’t take my words too seriously
