Does connecting with a VPN server outside your own country result in roaming costs?

Hi there,

I’m not sure if this is the correct forum, so my apologies if my post is misplaced.

I’m wondering the following…

Let’s say, I’m in Germany, and I have internet on my mobile phone via my provider in Germany as well. Everything outside of the EU is considered “outside of your subscription” and will cost extra (a lot).

If I’m in Germany and I connect with a VPN server in, for instance America, will the data consumption of my provider still go via the German one, or is that considered roaming outside of the EU because it connected with a VPN in America?

So, in simpler terms, will the internet data consumption still go through the provider in Germany, or will it be considered data consumption outside of the EU?

(EDIT: I’m not talking about a WIFI connection, but 4G or 5G. So, when you’re outside your home for instance.)

I hope my question makes sense. And, if only Americans are on this forum, it could be that your subscriptions work differently so that this whole post makes even less sense.

Thanks in advance

You are still connected to the internet in whatever physical location you’re in. So that is where data is counted and charged.

You seem to understand that when your phone is connected to VPN, your wifi is still you wifi, it’s the way you connect to the internet.

It’s exactly the same for your 4g/5g connection out of the home. Just imagine the cell tower is your wifi router.

It is just internet that you are using, just the VPN part is encrypted. It is just like opening a website in the US while you are in Germany, you are just sending and receiving data from an IP address.

tldr; no, if you are in Germany, you are in Germany

BRD ist immer noch der eingan, nur der ausgang wird verändert. und eine Daten werden verrechnet von wo du ins Internet " eintauchst"

Perfect, that example explained it well. Thank you

Perfect, thanks for clarifying

Sorry, I don’t speak German. The country was just an example of
