There’s some sort of disclaimer language on the setting about how it’s not always on. The icon is persistent now but how can it be functioning so perfectly?(I never get a connection slow down)

Nope. I run Wireguard at home and use that instead. I can split the tunnel so only traffic that is headed to my LAN is via the VPN, or I can do a full tunnel where all traffic is routed to my LAN and my home connection is my “gateway”.
I use the Google one VPN, but noticed it was absolutely destroying my wifi call quality. So I added the Phone and Fi apps as exceptions, which resolved it.
You absolutely don’t HAVE to use the VPN
You didn’t even have too, Google collects all souls across the web 91% market share of search and they crawlers and fingerprint you across the entire internet.
You can never use a Google product but they have a profile for you and your contacts.

It kind of always had. Even in the beginning when you connected to a wifi out in the wild it would connect “securely”.
If you tell the VPN to bypass Android Auto, it works without any problem

Yeah you can turn off if you want, but protects when on public wifi and seems to get faster speed while turned on.
