I’ve seen many here claim that VPN kill switches are unreliable. What is your reasoning and how do you think they could be improved?
Thank you for voicing your opinion.

Killswitch + binding your client to the VPN will give you two layers of protection
there are 2 types i’ve experienced trying various paid vpn
one that claims to cut off all internet traffic once the vpn fails
another that claims to unload any sensitive app you designate.
i find the ones that kill sensitive apps to be consistently reliable.
Instead of kill switches use firewall rules, they’re far more reliable. Set your firewall to allow outbound connections only on the vpn interface. Set rules to allow management ports only on the local network
When do they work and how are they technically implemented?
The kill switch doesn’t work if the VPN app hasn’t been started? Have fun leaking in the future
The one on Mullvad works for me.
Mine has worked for me for at least the last 3 years, first with PIA and now Surfshark.
I have my torrenting program, Tixati, bound to the VPN adapter. If the VPN’s not active nothing gets uploaded or downloaded through Tixati, but everything else has internet access.
I use an older laptop with a bunch of external 1TB drives in every USB port and remote in when I need to service it.
Haven’t gotten one of those notices, (DMCA?), since I setup the kill switch. I used to get 3 or 4 a year before I setup a VPN and a kill switch.
This is a very good point.
It does for me as well.
