Do VPNs use a real or fake IP address from another country?

are vpns using a real ip address or does it make one up for you? is it possible that you are using someone elses IP address in another country?

thanks

“Fake” IP addresses aren’t really a thing. You can technically spoof an IP address but that’s not usually useful as then you won’t be able to receive any of the return traffic.

When you sign up for a VPN, most of the time you’re just tunneling your traffic through a real server in a datacenter somewhere. The IP address the websites you visit will see is the real IP address belonging to said server.

is it possible that you are using someone elses IP address in another country?

If that’s the case then the traffic has to flow via that person’s Internet access, which wouldn’t be possible without hijacking their router or some device on their network.

there’s no such thing as fake ip. if you forged own ip address how is any server gonna respond to you? ofc technically it is possible to send packets pretending to be somebody else or completely made up but they are one way.

malicious actors sometimes use multiple layers of proxy hosted by unknowing infected users

You use a VPN service’s IP that’s also used by many other customers. Some VPNs will rent out dedicated IPs for extra price if you want one.

VPNs use real IP addresses from their servers in other countries, fake ones don’t exist. These IPs are owned by the VPN provider and leased from ISPs or hosting companies.

You’re not using someone else’s personal IP, though you might share the same VPN server IP with other users (that’s called shared IP).
