I use protonvpn on my Mac. I have been reading about warp. Is warp similar, should I use both, or can I sometimes just use warp? What I am trying to explain is, should I use warp or does protonvpn render it redundant?
Thanks for any advice.

Warp encrypts your traffic to the nearest Cloudflare server and you access the internet from there. You do not choose the server location. Using both is redundant. Warp is good for bypassing network blocking or privacy concerns granted you’re chill with Cloudflare. If you’re looking to spoof your location and Geo-blocking then a regular vpn service is better. Warp is good for most casual people
Custom DNS (Cloudflare or else) has its purpose and benefit but Proton advises against using it in tandem with their VPN, as it may introduce DNS leaks. Depending on your use case, using Proton VPN along with a custom DNS may be making you more visible to the proxy you are trying to hide from. My unsolicited advice, use one or the other but not together.
Proton runs it’s own DNS servers and they include NetShield which supposedly does some filtering/blocking. I say supposedly because it’s works in the background and we can’t be sure what’s actually blocked/filtered.
Again, depending on what you are trying to achieve, a VPN provider that allows custom DNS maybe what you want. Custom DNS will allow precise filtering and finer control. Country specific list are amazing for example.
Custom DNS alone is a great approach to increase privacy for majority of people, unless you are trying to spoof your location. It won’t slow down your internet, VPN very likely will. Using a VPN may also measurably decrease your device (laptop/phone) battery. This may or may not matter to you but it’s worth considering.
The proverbial privacy Vin diagram of VPN & Custom DNS would have a very small area of overlap. They serve a different purpose. Look into NextDNS/AdGuard, IPVN/Mulvad, DNS over HTTPS.
Using ProtonVPN makes it redundant. Cloudflare Warp is basically a VPN as well, but more focussed on Cloudflare’s fast DNS service.
Which one gives more internet speed?
Agreed entirely. The app does something akin to a VPN but not exactly as it isn’t as customizable and functional as a fully fledged VPN.
My point stands as to setting 1.1.1.1 manually as a DNS server and no point of using it together with another VPN service.
