If am not downloading spicy stuff, would a vpn still benefit me? i am not really sure what they do that well
I am in the USA if it matters
I am on the internet like 24/7 but mainly play video games and watch stuff like YouTube and twitch along with various streaming services like Netflix and such
please and thanks
VPN’s aren’t intended to be used for illegal things, its just that a lot of people use a VPN when doing something illegal to mask their identity.
Using a VPN in general has its benefits.
- Far better encryption
- Privacy from snooping eyes of your ISP
- Data privacy from apps and services
- Some VPN’s have tracker/ad blocking built in
- etc, etc
I take comfort knowing I’m keeping my data to myself. Your ISP can basically build a profile on the type of person you are just by the accrued network logs. This is also how sites like Google and others identify you and target ads. Data is built on you and sold to others. Using a VPN prevents this, or at least makes it very difficult.
The 2 biggest uses of a VPN are downloading torrents in countries where it is not allowed and accessing streaming services outside their home regions. EX watching hbo max while in Europe, watching bbc iplayer in the US, watching UFC for free via Egypt.
Some benefits of using a VPN:
-
hide some info from your ISP, a company which already knows far too much about you
-
hide info from other devices on your LAN, and your router, which is especially important if you’re on public Wi-Fi
-
make it a little harder for web sites to track you, by hiding your home IP address from them
-
defeat geo-locking by some sites
-
some VPNs provide malware-site blocking, ad-blocking, parental controls features
-
maybe add multiple jurisdictions/countries in the way of anyone who wants to DMCA or sue you
If you’re using HTTPS, you already have some protection. But who knows if all the background services (updaters, cron jobs, etc) and non-browser apps in your system are using HTTPS (TLS) ?
Sign up for the VPN without giving ID (easy to do), always use HTTPS for all sites, and use OS’s generic VPN client.
I think Tom Scott did a better job explaining a VPN than I ever could
If your VPN provider is specific to something, such as PC Gaming, then there may be additional features.
What do you mean by spicy stuff?
I am having intermittent internet slow periods on my 1 pc, 2 iPads and 2 iPhones. I keep hearing rumors that SPECTRUM NC is deliberately slowing down NON-business accounts randomly. I do NOT have nor have I owned a VPN.
Will a VPN conceal my info from Spectrum? Does anyone know if a VPN is a good value in money and time.
I am also curious about the “spicy opportunity” to watch internet “art” that is banned in NC. Also would like to be able to play a few hands of Texas Holdem online. Online gambling also illegal in my state).
Anyone who answers my questions please go Boomer speed. I am 70. Had computers since 1990 but younger guys today give a technical explanation over my head. Simple correct advice from people who have a VPN please.
Thanks,
Will
This is true, of course unless you are signed into your Google Account, then Google still knows who you are
Should add that if you’re downloading copyrighted files directly you likely don’t need a vpn. It’s torrenting that you need one for.
So, no way to secure you internet if vpn are not fiable ?
lol what??? Tails along with Tor? What are you on??
it will allow you to do these things. vpn acts as a middle man for your internet traffic to flow through, allowing you to bypass location specific restrictions.
Should just for both in cases where federal or state law have laws on possession of copyrighted material.
what do you mean “secure you internet”? idk maybe your internet is secure enough
it all depends on what you do or if you are trying to hide something specifically from someone, a VPN could do that, but also there is no way to know for sure
Lol so did I! And just in time to wish you a happy cake day
