Betternet VPN shady stuff

So this is also one of those too good to be true VPNs which I’ve been pretty much trusting so far but yesterday’s update asked for another permission, none there than location. I got skeptical, I have AppOpsXposed so I thought I’d simply deny the permission but to my surprise, AppOpsXposed doesn’t think the app is either using the read external storage, pictures, location etc. Permission.

As the saying goes, “If you aren’t paying for the product, you are the product.”

If you aren’t paying for the VPN, you really shouldn’t be surprised.

I tried it, and it didn’t work. Set up the vpn and had no connectivity, either from browsers, or other apps. Emailed the devs a quick explanation, got a quick reply asking if I tried both mobile and WiFi, I hadn’t, and when I switched to WiFi it worked (tethering to another phone with the same carrier, so it might not be the carrier.

I don’t know if they’ll be able to fix it to work with my mobile carrier on my phone, but I’m really, really impressed by the support. For a vpn funded by advertising and affiliate marketing, I’m happily impressed.

Hey thanks for getting back, I’ve uninstalled the app but I’d happily reinstall it since I’m a fan. Can you explain the permissions needed for betternet? Why is photos and external storage read permission needed? If there’s a blog post or something detailing that, that’d be perfect

Hi quick question. The app on windows 10 sometimes shows 0 Kb in downloaded when connected to the vpn. But my ip is show to be regionating from somewhere else that I am not. Is the counter broken but the app is still hiding my location or is disconnected and I need to press disconnect and then connect to reconnect?
