I have been thinking about getting a VPN service that will hopefully also have a function to save all my passwords. I don’t know much about VPNs and the lik so I was hoping that you guys would be able to help me find a reliable one. I currently don’t have a lot of extra money as I’m still in college so something affordable is a must. Thanks!
If you don’t know much about VPN’s, why do you want one? Nord and a lot of VPN marketing departments are notorious for creating a problem and selling solutions to people that don’t know better.
Password keeper - lastpass or Roboform
VPN - NordVPN or PrivateVPN
There are many other options but these are my fav.
I am nervous about having my info leaked and stuff. I just want to have better cyber security
Do you know how much the cost?
A VPN isn’t going to help you with that. I’d wager every website you use, from your email, to social media, to your bank is HTTPS; which is already encrypted.
A VPN isn’t going to prevent malware from getting on your PC.
A VPN isn’t going to prevent your various online accounts from being compromised, especially if you reuse passwords or don’t use MFA.
VPN isn’t voodoo magic that protects you from hacker boogie men, as much as “Todays sponsor” of a youtube video tells you otherwise.
A VPN creates a tunnel (often secure) between two locations. The most common use is an employee working remotely (their house, a cafe, whatever) who needs to access work resources that only exist “inside” the work network. They can use a VPN to create a tunnel into the work network, essentially to be on the same LAN.
Sometimes people will use a VPN to connect to a point B located in another country, because then services like Netflix think they’re in France or whatever and show them different shows and whatnot.
A VPN isn’t a one-stop shop “I’m secure now” solution.
Password keepers are free and have a paid subs if you need them to sync between phone apps and pc. PrivateVPN is $72.00 a year. There are free VPN options but they slow down the internet too much for my liking.
Thats good to know! Thank you for educating me. I’ll wager a password safe is still a good option?
Password managers are a good idea for sure. In my experience protecting everything from normal people, to small business, to billion dollar orgs…password reuse is the bane of my existence.
Password managers help combat password reuse. VERY rarely is a hacker going to brute-force a password by trying every combo. Usually a website gets hacked, the password table gets leaked, and “hackers” (if you can call them that) will just try the leaked username/password on other sites to see if it’s been reused elsewhere.
Always use MFA on your accounts if it has the option. If the option to use a code generator is available, as opposed to a text message or email, use that instead. Even if I know your password, if you use a code generator on your phone, I can’t touch your account.
Thanks for the advice. I’ll get a password manager right away! Any recommendations?
The one you will reliably use is the best one. If you have Apple devices, they have a manager built into them integrated across devices using keychain.
Otherwise, explore the commonly used ones and see which ones have the features you like. Many of them offer premium versions with expended functions (sometimes multi-device is a premium feature, which is why I mentioned keychain above).
Commonly used ones include LassPass and Bitwarden.
