Account restricted for using a vpn

My account was recently restrited for using a VPN… I am not able to withdraw my purchased coins. I opened a trouble ticket and they explained to me that I was restricted from withdrawring my coins for 45 days… I wish they would have notified me that using a VPN was not allowed. I just logged into my bank using a VPN… And I decided download TD ameritrade’s “think or swim” using a VPN… No problem… Its been a long time, but i decided to loginto “think or swim”, again, using my VPN… NO PROBLEMS, What so ever… So why after being a faithful coinbase customer for over 6 years are they locking me out… Its crazy!. As a matter of fact, because I wanted to show solidarity with coinbase and their current SEC difficulties, I started purchasing coins from Coinbase, more often than normal. I don’t daytrade at all, and I only collect coins… I’m a HODLer… Cant believe they would treat me this way…

 no… you don’t say! DON’T USE VPNs.

This literally just happened to me. No warning just a 45 day ban from sending. Who do we have left now? Kraken ? They should have it Plastered all over their site that we can’t use VPNs obviously ppl in crypto have them on all the time.

Were you already logged into the Coinbase account by cookies? In that case it shouldn’t be a problem. However I imagine if you logged out and then logged back in with your VPN it might raise a flag as you’re using a new computer/server/IP/etc. I do use VPN at home for fun but it’s mostly when I’m on public networks that I feel safer with it. So I’d say login first, stay logged in, then use VPN all you want.

Coinbase SUCKS because of this. They just froze my gf’s account when we where on a holiday and she logged into her coinbase while accidentally using vpn (we had active to watch usa netflix). They are not able to provide her any local support in ph and just decided to liquidate her account instead. Wow, just wow. Be careful guys, I would stay far away from Coinbase, its poison and their support is pure nightmare.

You should be use Split Tunneling on your VPN to exclude/include certain apps or sites from using/not using the VPN.

I have used a vpn with cb for years there is nothing in the tos that bans vpn’s, u did something else besides a vpn. I use a vpn with kraken, cdc, etc, never an issue, the vpn and Charlie bravo is a reddit urban legend.

So, I want to add some information that I believe will beneficial to some… I want to go back, about 6 months. You may doubt what I am about to tell you, however hang on, its a bit strange…

I received a call about 6 months ago, from a man claiming to work with Coinbase. He began by telling me who he was and that he had a few questions for me. I off course doubted him and said that he must be a fake, however he knew exactly how much money was in my Coinbase account and my caller id showed Coinbase as the caller… So I then decided to cooperate with the person and answer a few questions. He asked me, if I use a VPN when connecting to Coinbase and I stated the truth, which was no, because at that time I did not use one. He went on to say, that there was some login attempts from another part of the country, where I do not reside. I was a little concerned at this and asked him to make sure to block anyone trying to hack my account… HA, HA… But here is where my present situation with a restricted account gets stranger…

I have been using a VPN now for about 4 months and have had no problems logging in, depositing funds and withdrawing crypto’s. But something recently changed. Let get to that in a minute, first I will describe how I normally login. When I log in, I first input my email and password, then I get a text message with a code that needs to be typed into a box on the sign-in page. Then I get an email verification. It worked flawlessly every time… No problems…

Now here is where things changed and I will explain how I think Coinbase determined I was using a VPN. Very recently I started opening the Coinbase app on my phone to view coin prices before work. Then, out of the blue, the instructions for logging into to Coinbase on my personal computer where changed. Instead of getting a text, and verifying by email, the login page said that I would need to verify my identity by opening the mobile app and verify through it. This was a bit strange to me, but the result was the same and I was able to login. A couple of days later, I was trying to withdraw a coin and got the message that my account had been restricted. I then reached out to chat support and spoke at length with customer service rep, Tefiti. The person asked me if I had been using a VPN and I stated that yes I had and that I use it to protect myself online. Tafiti then said that my account was be restricted until November 16th, 2023. This person also said that my login locations did not match… Wait a second… Stop… Think…I asked Tafiti, how they were able to know my location… After all, I was using a VPN, connected to Los Angeles, a couple of counties over… Well lets see here, could the way I was logging in, using my cell phone, have provided them my actual location…Just food for thought…

But here’s the thing, this really sucks, those are my coins and I purchased them, with my hard earned money. I just finished with a long chat with a Coinbase chat assistant named Clint… This guy did not give me any information at all. I just cant believe that they can just dismiss my concerns, like I am nothing. Recently I began to buy a lot more cypto’s from Coinbase, because I wanted to show solidarity with them, in regards the the SEC probe… So much for solidarity…

Why do you need your use a VPN? Coinbase already know who you are and where you live, what privacy are you protecting from?

Whenever I use my VPN, the location is set to about 100 miles away from me… I am in just a few counties over.

I am using a VPN right now… Are you surprised… I had a lengthy chat last night with a Coinbase chat assistant who was useless, while logged into my VPN. Until using a VPN is deemed illegal in the United States, I will continue to use one. If Coinbase has a policy to withhold customers property if they are using a VPN, then they need to say it out load, for all to hear. All they have to do is send an email to all their KYC’d customers and it will make world headlines, very quickly. Problem solved, no one gets hurt and customers would have been duly warned.

You know I am hesitant to name any exchanges, because I don’t want to bring any attention to them, but there are a number of exchanges that you can use. Coinbase is not doing the crypto community any good, by keeping loyal customers from their coins.

I think the key here, is not using the Coinbase app to verify you identity when logging in… I suspect that is how they were able to determine, I was using a VPN. I never had any problems logging in using the standard text and email verification. The other option would be to use a 2FA verification.

I totally agree that Coinbase should be warning its customers that using a VPN will result in their coins being locked from withdraw for 45 days. The worst part is that they will not allow their customers to contest this disproportionate use of power, in a timely manner.

I haven’t totally given up on Coinbase, but this experience has put a damper in my mood. Until I get my coins back, I will not do any business with them.

Kraken literally just suspended my withdraws today, i THINK for using VPN also…still waiting to hear back

I was gonna say just preordered an ICO an used a vpn. Opened the Wallet only, not from the CB app. Had zero issues.
But I am wandering with Airdrops from the ICO I bought using a vpn will I need that vpn on in the same country as I initially did when I purchased the day they’re released? I don’t think it’s fair for the community to defeat the initial purpose of Crypto in the first place. It was designed to be a better way of life. A middle finger to the old family’s that have owned our asses ever since the US let our country be bought in 1871.
I don’t see how a decentralized Wallet is even open to scrutiny, when CB openly says they’re not responsible for anything that happens using that wallet. I assumed it was a decentralized wallet, not under any review. Like why would CB even have a Web3 wallet if half the crypto coming from web3 Dapps are decentralized and not monitored? Its all because the taxed money we use to buy taxed coins are subject to MORE tax (according to the ones who tax us in the first place)

According to the chat person, who was assisting me yesterday, she or he said the suspicious activity was most likely due to me using a VPN…The agents name was Tefiti…

I am in the USA and I use Los Angeles, for local use… The local use is pretty much all my daily activities…

They resume responsibility for the main Coinbase App. But the Wallet is a different story. They assume no responsibility, and you have access to browsers and coins that aren’t available in the US. I assumed that when I use that wallet for those Coins they were to be anonymous. Why would any Co. at all have access to a Decentralized Wallet? I’m confused?
So I recently purchased An ICO that I had to turn a VPN on to do. Those coins will airdrop according to the white page on a certain date. Will I be restricted when those coins arrive? I think this is extremely wrong, and the TikTok Ban bill has nothing to do with TikTok, it’s THE VPNs THEY REALLY WANT BANNED. It’s the patriot Act 2.0. Removing any chance at internet anonymity.

Using my VPN was just a habit. I have been using it for about 4 months. I use it for just about everything. Logging into my bank account, email, and everything else. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. I slowly deposited about 5,000 dollars into my Coinbase account (using my laptop), ever since the SEC started going after Coinbase. It was just my way of saying, thank you to Coinbase for standing up for us. All the money I deposited into Coinbase was done using my VPN. If you read my comment from 4 days ago, I think using the Coinbase app is the reason for my restriction. From what I can tell, other people use a VPN also without any problems. One person on this chat, has stated that he or she does not even use thier new cell phone to access the Coinbase, because new cell phones tend to have a VPN installed by default and he/she does not want to make any mistakes. That said, I never had any problems logging into Coinbase using the standard text and email verification process, which does not entail using the Coinbase app…

Also, just my personal opinion, but I feel safer from Anti-Free speech tyrants, who want to control what people read online. I feel we are now entering a stage of extreme violence based upon political viewpoints and I think people need to protect themselves from a burgeoning surveillance state. With the latest outbreak of violence in the world, there is a high likelyhood that a World War III is fast approaching. If this does happen, we can forget about our freedom, because Marshall Law will be implemented and those who have alternative opinions will be identified and targeted. It’s just the nature of the beast, we live in a world that is creeping towards all out totalitarian control and my choice of news and information could, under the right circumstance, make me a target by a gestapo like state. I know its a bit extreme, but the pandemic taught one thing, and that is, when a government and media turns its citizens against one another, based upon medical choices, were in deep trouble. By the way, I lost a fairy high paying job during this time, because I felt I should be able to choose my medical choices. It was scary to say the least, but I’m still here, just a bit shaken up… Thus a VPN feels safer…

You cannot KYC a customer if you don’t know Who, What and Where your customer.

Yes it’s likely the vpn server you connected to could have been used to scam coinbase customers or anything fraudulent/suspicious really.
