Work from home VPN Global Protect

I have an Eero 6 setup in my home, everything seems to be running fine on this network minus my wife’s work PC. Her work PC and off VPN this machine performs as expected with other machines on the network. When she turns on her VPN her speeds nearly and completely die off.

What I have discovered is the VPN is reassigning her work PC a new IP address. This I believe is the issue and need to figure out if the Eero can use this new IP address or if I need to get the VPN to stop assigning this IP address.

Sounds like traffic shaping/throttling by her employer to me. I highly doubt this is Eero related.

I use Global Protect every single day from home on my Eero 6 pro and have no issue. I use it on multiple devices - my phone, multiple laptops.

VPNs always assign the client a ip on the network they are connecting to, so that is normal. It sounds like something else is going on. What version of Global Protect is she using?

I would reach out to her work’s IT support. eero has little to no effect on a device using a VPN, as the traffic is travelling through an encrypted layer.

Things to note:

  • The default eero subnet (192.168.4.0/22) cannot conflict with the subnet on the other end of the VPN. You’d fix this under Advanced>DHCP & NAT>Manual IP
  • The VPN solution may not support connections over IPv6. You can either disable IPv6 on her computer or for your whole eero network, if used.
  • The issue could be on the other end of the VPN. Test the application and login on another computer if possible to see if the issue is tied to her machine or if it is external.

What I have discovered is the VPN is reassigning her work PC a new IP address. This I believe is the issue and need to figure out if the Eero can use this new IP address or if I need to get the VPN to stop assigning this IP address

This is a misunderstanding of what is going on. The eero isn’t “using” a particular IP or not, that is kind of nonsense

What is happening is, when your wife turns on her VPN, it is tunneling ALL of her traffic out over the VPN to her company’s network, and then it is going out to the internet. This introduces overhead, which will reduce speed, plus the network connection at her office as well as the speed of the VPN appliance at the company will be bottlenecks

This isn’t an eero problem, she needs to contact her company’s IT department

Is this a setting in the Eero app? I’m not seeing it if it is in-app.

Hey OP it’s been 3 years I’m sure but I’m running into the exact issue with my home set up today. I have half gig internet plan and regularly pull between 200-400 mbps download but once I’m on Global Protect VPN I slow WAY down to 7 and some times 2 mbps

Did you find a solution to this problem? My wife who uses a different VPN altogether isn’t seeing any issues with her connection it slows slightly but considerably better than my connection through global protect.

I know it’s been some time but interested to see what you found

Do you have optimize for video conferencing and gaming turned on? My work computer which uses a VPN was slow when this was on when others were using a lot of bandwidth. My hypothesis is that the eero could not tell I was in a video conference because of the VPN and it was throttling me. No issues since I turned the setting off.

Hello u/Osoroshii,

Have you tried using the VPN outside of the eero network to verify if the VPN is what is bottlenecking the speed? If it is not, you can reach out to the company’s IT department to find out if there are ports that you can open to allow the VPN through the eero firewall via IP reservation and port forwarding.

Below is a guide on how to setup port forwarding.

Thank you,

eero Support

Off vpn her machine get 80-120mbps as soon as vpn is turned on it drops to 3-6bps.

Unless her VPN is configure as a split-tunnel, all connections are routing through the VPN. It is entirely probable that her employer is shaping/throttling the connection over the VPN to manage bandwidth.

I don’t believe it’s an Eero issue, her IT department is giving a run around and not very helpful. They won’t even tell her what the PerPort Limit is to the VPN. I’m also trying to see is our ISP is possibly throttling that VON traffic for some reason

Yes. It is a eero labs feature. Go to the discover tab.

The labs on mine are Band Steering, Local DNS Caching or WPA3 only :frowning:
