Wireguard Deploy on VPS mikrotik CHR or use free vpn service like protonvpn or others?

Hi, I’m currently trying to maintain privacy on the internet and it seems like the wireguard protocol is good.

I currently have a cheap linux vps for $25 per year and I will make it into Mikrotik CHR version 7 and I configure only wireguard vpn.

or is it better to use a free vpn service like ProtonVPN or others that have the wireguard protocol?

what do you think about this?

if there are other recommendations please submit.

This depends on your threat vector:

Proton VPN will encapsulate your traffic and route it over their network, hopefully anonymizing your traffic. This relies on you trusting Proton to not be logging your IP Address (and being able to trace back your network traffic to your ISP).

Routing your traffic through your VPS host will tie your traffic and identity together via your account you make payments from. Additionally many service providers like Netflix deny consumer-like traffic from known VPS netblocks.

If you really want to anonymize your identity you’ll want to use a provider like Proton (or better, Mullvad). Mullvad for example doesn’t create accounts with stored billing information and has zero logging.

If you want to be ‘secure’ online and avoid tracking consider using ad blockers (uBlock origin) or even consider PiHole.

Wireguard is an amazing lightweight protocol for point to point connections but doesn’t inherently make your connection private.

You will need a license for CHR tho. I would go for own VPN server. Whatever free vpn services advertise, they still can know exactly what traffic related to which customer and what resources each customer is accessing. And yes, as been said, your VPS provider also can do that, although I would trust VPS provider more than free VPN service provider.

thanks you for information
