Every time I travel to the Middle East for work I have issues getting my VPNs to work. I have to try several different servers and when it finally connects it only works for fine minutes or so. I tried both prooton and muulvad.
Has anyone else had this problem?

probably because you’re using public vpns, I never had any problems with using dedicated / private servers on OpenVPN or Wireguard.
totally it’s like playing hide and seek with firewalls lol. good luck finding a server that lasts
Most middle eastern countries block and restrict VPNs and TOR, and other methods, even if you somehow got a VPN to work, it would be fucking slow. You can get it to work in some countries by using an obfuscation proxy, some VPNs has it now. Go to the VPN settings and look for some advanced option like obfs4/socks or some fancy name and enable it. And do NOT fucking use Wireguard, Wireguard is shit and fucking easy to catch, you will never can get it work in any country that actually blocks VPNs. OpenVPN TCP + an obfuscation proxy will work in some countries, it would be fucking slow but it would work. Speaking from real life experience.
It wasn’t that long ago that you couldn’t take a modem into some of those countries.

Why are VPNs so unreliable in the Middle East?
Many of them are using (DPI) deep packet inspection to determine the nature of the traffic you are sending online and are able to dynamically block it. Protocols like OpenVPN, IPSec, Wireguard, are all very easily identifiable and able to be blocked.
Find a VPN provider that does dynamic data obfuscation, double encryption, etc., that is able to bypass these types of DPI.
China and Russian anti-VPNing has become quite good lately. No paid or unpaid VPN was working for me across IOS or Android, not for a lack of looking either. No doubt this capability is bleeding through to other governments and the VPN companies are not catching up

We once had problems in Abu Dhabi with openvpn but not with wireguard. So I suspect there were some protocols schenanigans going on. But this was three years ago.

Get a VPS (digital ocean etc), set it up yourself (shadowsocks + plugin to connect to your own wireguard server). Sure, complex implementation. But in the end you only have Wireguard client on your device (a single working app)

Cause yeah, As others have mentioned there is internet restrictions in middle east countries, I myself am from Iran and we have one of the worst of it.
The VPNs we use are not like any other VPN you use in Europe. It’s not OpenVPN or Wireguard.
We use some non-famous opensource protcols called xray, V2ray, etc. (In a selfosted server).

Not really, Most of the Middle East is on the South West of the Asian continent. Parts also go into North East Africa, and Turkey goes into Europe, but most is considered to be on the Asian Continent. (Though China definitely isn’t in the Middle East lol)
