Which VPN to choose?

I’m traveling to Shanghai for 2 weeks and have come to the terms that I might need a VPN when I go there instead of toughing it out lol. I’ve seen so many options, such as expressvpn and nordvpn, but everybody has been saying they are pretty bad. I’ve seen Astrill,Letsvpn, mullvad etc. But all have been pretty mixed reviews. It’s my first time even using VPN so I’m kind of unsure. I’m only there for two weeks and want to not go for the most expensive option. I mostly need it to get to the restricted/banned websites that aren’t available there. Since I need my email for school. Any suggestions on which vpn is the most solid out of all others? Thank you for your time!

Letsvpn its cheap and u can buy 1 week $1.99
And works fine for me

NordVpn been useless for me, Mullvad works great

NordVPN didn’t work for me.

I would just get a roaming eSIM with unlimited/lots of data, you wouldn’t need a VPN then.

I’m right now in China. I’m using Mullvad on my phone and let’s vpn on wife’s phone. Both working perfectly fine.
If you want esim then I’m using CMLink. That’s also working fine.

For vpn i used let’s vpn, cheap and worked perfectly.

If you stay for just two weeks, there is no need to buy a VPN. Just buy an eSIM card from Nomad, Airalo, or Trip.com(check which one has a good offer), set it up before you travel, activate it once you land in China, and then you can access all your Apps without VPN immediately.

I use secure vpn on android everytime , works like charm even for free version.

The eSIM’s from Yesim include a VPN that you can switch on or off in the app. Worked perfect when i was in China.

Does HolaFly works properly in China?

Surfshark worked well for me

NordVPN didn’t work at all

Local Chinese sim + LetsVPN working perfectly for me (currently in China?

LetsVPN.
I’m in China now on a 2 week trip.
It’s great

I think getting an eSIM is better since you’re just going there as a tourist.

I am not paid to say this but ByteSIM worked well for me (specifically the 30GB plan) during my trip to China 2 weeks ago. You don’t need to pay for additional VPN because Meta (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) and Google-related apps all work. Telegram and X even.

But, if you heavily rely on TikTok, it won’t work though since the SIM is HK-based — where TikTok is banned.

P.S: don’t avail anything “unlimited” / “unli traffic” because no matter where you buy one, it will just be useless as China implements FUP (Fair Usage Policy) that ultimately bottle necks and slows down download speeds once you consumed 5GB for a day. That’s my lesson learned when I went to Shanghai last Dec 2023.

Went to China couple of times. Tried different brands of VPN also. Everything is unreliable. Best option is to get an esim. You won’t need VPN if you access data thru esim and you can use normal internet. Only drawback is hotel wifi is still chinese internet and won’t be any of use to you. Check out nomad for esim packages and make sure to purchase before arriving in china.

Don’t bother fuckign with vpn. The wall is too mighty. Use Airalo get a big data package and just enjoy your trip. Surf tik tok.

Second this. Worked 100% for me - even with lots of YouTube watching. Can’t use more than two devices, but I’ve had no issue getting by with phone and laptop

What country’s eSIM is recommended? I’ll be traveling to China soon and been wondering the same. Wouldn’t a Chinese eSIM defeat the purpose? If using another country’s eSIM, wouldn’t it be the same as roaming with my own cell phone provider?

I will be in China in a few months…does LetsVPN let me select the location? I have a few apps that do not work outside of the US.

Wouldn’t a Chinese eSIM also block all sites like hotel WiFi?
