Depends on what problem you are looking to solve. You normally don’t need a VPN provider, almost all of your traffic is already encrypted, but if you are looking to solve a specific problem (national sensorship, circumventing geolocking etc), then that is something else.

edit: Also yeah, I don’t think you’ll find a one-time purchase kind of consumer level VPN service.

  2. The only one time purchase is to buy your own networking equipment (one time buy) and build out a VPN yourself on your own hardware.

There used to be some “lifetime” deals, but I think they’re rare now. Maybe there are specials at the start of the Christmas buying season or something.

What are your thoughts on Epic Browser’s built in VPN or ProtonVPN? Both are free, but honestly i haven’t done a deep dive in the quality or security they provide.

The only reason I really want a VPN is because of content that isn’t available in my country. I’ve been using protonVPN for over a year but I’ve heard that a free VPN isn’t a great option, yet I wouldn’t want to deal with a subscription service because I could probably go months without using it and still paying. But maybe there are free ones that don’t collect and sell all of your data

A couple years ago I bought a one-payment lifetime license of a VPN service, and it’s been good so far. But I don’t think those terms are available any more, or they’re rare.

Protonvpn is probably one of the best, when you look at their background and mission within privacy. The free tier of protonvpn is however limited (speeds and servers), but is a fine way of trying it out for free.
I have no knowledge of epic browser.

Sounds like a sale/deal that a VPN service would run trying to get new users.

I can’t see how it’s a good deal for them, but it’s a good deal for me, as long as they stay in business. I’m already well past the point where it’s paid off for me, cheaper than a subscription.
