For 2+ years my employer has used a Meraki VPN appliance. Not sure what model, nor did I handle any of the setup. I’ve always had trouble connecting from my home via Apple devices.
Here’s a summary:
-
Connect iPad from home network = does not work
-
Connect MacBook from home network = does not work
-
Connect either device via hotel WiFi = works
-
Connect via Verizon cell phone hotspot = works
So far it sounds like some problem with my home network. But here’s the kicker: I have a Windows 10 client that connects successfully via my home network.
Our IT people have brushed it off as some problem with my setup / config…which may be the case. Would appreciate any suggestions for potentially tracking down this problem.
You need to get some more information on what exactly is happening during the connection. “Does not work” isn’t really a useful diagnostic indicator. Does it fail to connect, does it connect and fail to pass traffic, does it pass traffic for a while but then stop? Need more info.
You might find it helpful to monitor your logs while you’re attempting a connection. There’s a useful article here on viewing your PPP logs. Gather some more detailed info and bring it here.
Some info about your home network would be helpful, as well. What router are you using? Who’s your ISP?
Restarting typically helps. Either the device or the router / modem at home.
Thanks for the info. The PPP log link provided a little more info than the generic “unable to connect” messages the devices display by default.
I was hung up on the fact that the Apple devices would connect anywhere but the house, while the windows device actually did connect thru the home Internet. Nevertheless, I reached out to my ISP with some of the error log details and they had it running within about an hour. The ISP manages a router on their end of customers connections, just in case customers configure their WiFi in Access Point mode. Mine was set up for Router mode (which what the ISP instructed) essentially putting 2 routers on the connection and blocking VPN traffic. They confirmed my equipment was running in Router mode and disabled the router on their end. Now things appear to be running normally. Guess the Windows device was somehow able to navigate the dual routers while the Apple devices could not.
