VPN no longer working?

Just realized I’m not seeing the little VPN icon anymore. Does this feature still work for you guys or did they silently can it?

Check the Fi app and find your privacy and security settings, making sure it’s enabled there.

I wish you could turn this on/off via widget… used to have so many issues with other apps when it was on (random example, whole foods app wouldn’t generate a prime bar code to scan with VPN on)

My VPN is still working.

Hey there u/watertank,

Thanks for reaching out about this! The Google Fi VPN is in the process of being updated to better protect your privacy. In the near future, you will be able to update your VPN by going into the Fi app and turning the VPN off and then on again. Once you see 2 VPNs named “Google Fi VPN (Legacy)” and “Google Fi VPN”, you can remove “Google Fi VPN (Legacy)”. Thank you! -Abby

What does “(Legacy)” mean?

On Pixel 7, VPN is enabled through the Google One app even if you don’t have a Google One membership.

I switched to the Google One VPN. The Google Fi VPN started causing network issues. I haven’t had a problem since.

I wouldn’t be surprised, since they killed all the other key features, like carrier switching.

Glad I found this post! Just got mine turned back on. (for whatever reason) :joy:

Looks like this was it. Thank you! Don’t know how or when this got unflipped

Add the app to the “Allow apps to bypass VPN” list. They are located under VPN settings.

I have a Pixel 6a on Fi. Should I use the One VPN or the Fi VPN?

Normally it means an older version that may or may not be supported. Not sure why it says that here, maybe Google is planning on removing support for it going forward and only providing the service thru Google one. I don’t know

They didn’t kill carrier switching. It still works outside the US and allows you to switch between T-Mobile US and Three AT.

Carrier switching was between T-Mobile and Sprint but since the merger it’s all the same so nothing to switch to. Unless they also go with AT&T or Verizon but then prices will go up probably.

Glad I could help! I noticed mine was off the other day as well, so something may have happened during an update.

Might have been my own doing and just forgot it though. I had been toggling it regularly because some video streaming apps didn’t work with it on, but it appears they’ve added them to the exceptions and they work now, so that’s nice.

I am not outside the US.

Used to be T-Mobile and Sprint and US Cellular

Post merger, it was T-Mobile and US Cellular

Now it’s just T-Mobile (Sprint part of T-Mobile, and still get US Cellular roaming). So service is essentially same as postpaid T-Mobile. Back in the day, Fi was a huge advantage. Still great due to price, but the configuration is no longer special.

Same. Just noticed this morning it was off, had to re-enable it in Fi app settings.
