The company I work for require me to log in using AWS from my personal Laptop, the registration key I use is for EU and the I. P address shown when logged in to AWS is Ireland.
My question is if I am abroad in Bangkok and use my GLInet router and use a VPN directed to the UK before logging into AWS will this allow me to log in successfully and show that I am trying to access AWS from the UK or will it not cause any problems logging in either way due to AWS showing my IP is in Ireland when logged in?
If I don’t log into a VPN will access be denied when trying to log in and can I get around this problem using my VPN mentioned?
Please help me with my anxiety in resolving this or having peace of mind prior to this emergency trip I have.
Kindest regards
AWS doesn’t care where you log in from, but your company might. You need to ask them.
Your AWS account administrators will be able to see the IP that you’re using to connect, and they might be using a system that detects whether you’re on a VPN or not. Or, they might not care.
AWS, unlike M365/azure, doesn’t have many out of the box conditional access policies.
Hence, if your company actually has something built in to geoblock, it’s custom built. It’s also safe to assume that if they went through the trouble of creating said system, they’re probably also looking for VPN providers such as Nord or Express.
The way I see it you’ve got two options.
Either configure your home router as a VPN or host your own VPN in your own aws account. The former will work 100%. The latter I’m 99.9% positive will also work since most providers won’t block AWS IPs. If anyone asks you, you can always say that you’re hosting your own VPN in AWS for security reasons.
Thank you for the reply. So even though the AWS registration key states it’s for EU as long as I have a vpn router active before I log into aws I should be able to log in?
My Company don’t really hardcore look into this so my only concern is actually getting logged in to the AWS. The company have people who work from Philippines but they will have a different registered key to access from there.
I am currently using this VPN router now in the UK and everything seems to work fine I am just concerned once I go overseas something will go wrong because testing it in the legitimate country for error might not show since there is nothing for it to cause an error as if it wasn’t working technically I’d still be on the correct country so I would be non the wiser.
I just really need some solid info as I feel sick from anxiety I’ve litrally packed my life away to do this move due to depression and almost ending my life so I have all my hope set on this and if it does not work when I get there I just don’t know what I will do.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Hopefully I will get more confidence the more responses.
Do you have a technical background in this.
Im not tech savvy enough for the home VPN option I would not even know where to start. It took me hours to figure out the router VPN setup which I think I’ve sorted that using private Internet access.
Would the 2nd option even be possible? I have my own laptop and have to click on a desktop icon/app (amazon workspace)I then have to log in with my credentials and use okta verify to get a pin code to access my work desktop within AWS how would it be possible to also run my own AWS within this especially with all the user rights I won’t have once in there.
Sorry if I’m completely of course with this haha
Do you not think the Gl axt1800 will be sufficient with my UK ip address linked to it via private Internet access? Once in Thailand to able me to access my work AWS?
Depends, is the VPN using split tunneling?
So… You don’t need to “run” AWS, it’s a cloud provider, that’s the whole point
It’s a little intricate in the sense that you need to start a VM, install OpenVPN, connect to OpenVPN etc.
This video will guide you pretty well:
