Netflix works in other countries, but shows and movies that are available change based on your IP address. If you want to ensure access to the shows you are already watching, set up a VPN server at your home before you leave. Don’t use a commercial VPN service because streaming services like Netflix actively look for IP address ranges of VPN providers and block them.
I have a permanent VPN connection between my homes, both located in different countries. No matter where I am, I can watch all the streaming services without issues.
Absolutely concur. I have same setup - am at my house in Italy and have a VPN to my house in the US. No problems at all. When I tried it with a commercial VPN service I had lots of problems (even with a dedicated VPN IP address). A good router (I use ASUS at both ends) allows you to setup a router-to-router VPN. Set up correctly, you can have two wifi networks, one with and the other without VPN.
Problem is if you search for VPN online, you’ll get a lot of information from VPN services. What/how you set it up depends on:
server/home side - what router do you have, does is support/can it be configured for VPN, what protocols does it support
how permanent (if it is permanent, you can go router-to-router), In your case sounds like it is not so
what device(s) do you want to use? If it’s a windows computer, you have built in VPN (I don’t know about MAC). If it’s a streaming stick, it gets difficult. VPN software for services are plentiful but software to connect to your router, less so.
if you have multiple devices you want to connect, you might consider a travel router provided you can find one that supports the VPN protocol you are going to use
Finally, you need to pick a VPN protocol. For me, the easiest to implement was PPTP. Many will say it is antiquated and not secure but it is a simple USERID/PASSWORD protocol and if you pick a weird USERID (not admin) and a strong password, it’s fine.
