Turn off VPN notifications unless there's a problem?

P7 Pro in the UK: When we got VPN with Google One I began using it, but there is an annoying persistent notification present at all times, just saying “VPN is connected”. It can be swiped away but returns quite quickly. I have silenced it, but it still appears on the lock screen.

I can block all notifications from Google One related to the VPN, but I would prefer not to have to as I’d like to be informed if there is an issue e.g. it stops working.

Perhaps the notification is necessary to keep the app active, but surely this can’t be the extent Google has integrated their own VPN into their own OS on their own flagship device?

On Pixel 4 and Pixel 6, I cannot find it by navigating, but you can open Settings, search for notifications, select Notifications under Privacy and Permission manager, and this will show App notifications. Find Google One, do not turn off all notifications, but turn off VPN. This should get rid of the VPN notification but keep the key icon around so you still know the VPN is connected at a glance.

Years back, Android became much more strict about forcing notifications to appear when an app is doing something. It serves users from the standpoints of security and information, and prevents apps from performing unknown operations in the background. I wouldn’t be excited to see Google circumventing this just because they can. Better to hold themselves as subjects to their own rules.

You can set the notification channel to minimize it so it doesn’t show up on the lockscreen, or you can use another app like Tasker with the AutoNotification plugin to essentially snooze it as soon as it comes up.

I just swiped it away. You’ll see a key icon up by your signal icon upper right. The notification for google one VPN isn’t persistent like it used to be.

Thank you soooo much! Those notifications every time I leave my home WiFi were so irritating.

Thank You, I hate notifications being left there for anything, and this would not go away. I am very minimalist and not sure I even like the little icon next to the wifi icon but that is useful to tell me it is on, just have to get used to that.

Yes, thank you! I’ve been annoyed by that for months.

Edit: Removed a typo.

6 months after you wrote this, still helping people- me! Thanks soo much!

You guys are a legend. Was about to snap my phone in half because I was fed up to seeing this VPN banner! I would have your babies if I could. Thank you so much!
